Description This is Sert, Grion's companion and my all-time favourite D&D character. Say hi.^^
He's a crafty, untrustworthy, charismatic manipulative ba(sta)rd... for a greater cause. Not the twisted greater cause of many RPG villains, just... to make a long story short and in D&D terms, he's Good, pure 100% Good, but he wouldn't know Legal if it dragged him down an alley and beat him to a pulp.

Two basic beliefs guide his actions: the first is a classic (but oh so rarely followed) "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few", the second is "I have power, therefore I MUST use it for my land, my world". This means that his personal wishes and needs always come last, but it also means that he cannot sacrifice his life, because, if he were to die, Hyrule would lose an important pawn.
He also believes that all that "I'm-so-good-and-noble-I-can-try-to-save-everyone-and-get-away-with-it" stuff only happens in ballads and in the heads of some deluded idiots, and the three things combined make for some f***ed up...ehm UNUSUAL decision making.

To name but a few examples, he would send Grion to certain death if it meant saving a city. He wouldn't LIKE the decision, nor would he FEEL it was the right thing to do... he's far from emotionless, quite the contrary in fact, and he'd mourn his friend forever. But he'd do it nonetheless, if he THOUGHT it were for the best.
He wouldn't, however, kill himself to save a family, for if he did, who would coordinate the forces of Good the next time some villain decides it's a good time to try and free Ganon?*

Why the sacrifice mentioned in Grion's background, then? Because they were both as good as dead. Again, logic: "If I don't do this, two die. If I do this, one dies and the monster is taken away from Hyrule. I'm dead both ways. Let's do this." That and, for once, he followed his instinct... ad his instinct said "save Grion you moron", plain and simple. Which brings me to the next point.

He's a telepath and pretty good at mind control. If he wants someone to do something, be sure that this someone will do it. Out of his own free will. Honest. Chances are that the something that needs to be done is way more important than Sert's honour, or conscience, since all those pretty values don't actually help saving the world. Before resorting to mind control, however, he will try to talk people into what he believes it's best for Hyrule. He's good at talking people into things, he has the skills and the charisma. If they accept, well, it saves a lot of effort.
The only person towards whom he's completely sincere is Grion himself. The fact that a) Grion knows him well enough to notice when he's lying, and b) he's 142% sure of the warrior's loyalty kinda helps, but that friendship truly is the only pure and precious thing in a life that, given his choices, leaves very little space for personal happiness.

Enough for today. I think I'll draw him again in the near future so I'll add his actual background. But while Grion is, all in all, your standard loyal silent warrior type, as cute as that may be, I felt that Sert deserved a more accurate character analysis. Oh, maybe he's cliched too and I never noticed... I hope not though°°

* In my game world, he really is a super-important NPC telepathically linking, organizing and guiding most of the heroes and adventurers throughout the land; here... he may be or he may think he is, your choice. He's totally honest in believing he is, anyway.

Wow, Sert looks awesome! And reading about how he sees things seems to fit with why Grion wanted to follow him in the first place, though I dunno if I myself would agree with him Yay for Sert!

Thanks!
Sometimes I don't agree with him either but, hey, that's what RPing is all about, isn't it? (even though most of the time I quarrel with Grion, his stats, his dice rolls - his, not mine, I don't roll like that with other characters <_< - and stubborn personality XD)

It's funny, but getting a better idea of Sert's character provides more insight into Grion than providing more details on Grion himself ever could.

And it's neat, 'cause now I can see exactly why Grion would have followed Sert with such dedication, and exactly why Grion's at such a loss upon Sert's death.

If you don't mind, I'm going to link to this from the Myriad Path central index thingy I'm maintaining.
