Description ...by the collector.

This is a depiction to something I called a 'Thump' when I was little, because that was the sound it made as it roamed the ancient halls at night that it called home, seeking out your mama and papa, because unlike most nightmares, this one only sought out the parents for their skin, leaving the scrawny kids to peek out their door after something thumped down the hall and witness their new life as an orphan.

I like how its presence even sent the rats fleeing, and the wife grappled with the beside table, sending it crashing spectacularly to the floor.
On a side note, I never imagined that shattering vase would cause me so much grief... Things you have never drawn before and surprise deadlines do not pleasantly mix.
I dearly enjoyed the angle of the scene, as it offered that warped, fainting perception of "IT'S ABOVE ME."
I thought it fun to add a bit of an "easter egg" in the drawing, something relating directly to the 'MAMA' film poster. Can you find it? (Though I admit it likely isn't that apparent.)

Drawn in Photoshop.

Dedicated to Jerry, who said I should draw pretty pictures.

Butterfly on the bed curtain and then the black spot on the roof.

Good work on finding the easter egg.
I'm glad I could inspire the same feelings I felt when I was little.

Your artwork for the Tomb Raider Reborn contest really caught my eye. Remarkable piece you have there!

Ho-wow! This... this is wonderfully, horribly twisted! That is one absolutely horrific monster there, Crittercreator! Excellent design on it - the detail you put into that inhuman monstrosity is absolutely fantastic (Goat eyes? Yeesh... creepy as all Hell!) But the monster is only tangential to the real horror you created with merely the title - you could have even conveyed it with only that poor, scared-out-of-his-skin kid there (again, wonderfully, horrific detail there) - Orphaned. Wow. I'm (debatably) an adult now, and still that concept scares me. That concept, the fear of loosing you parents, that you illustrated so clearly in this piece... absolutely masterful! The blood, the limbs, the torn sheets, the cracked lamp, the scurrying mice, and... WHY IS THERE A SKULL THERE?

All in all, a brilliantly detailed, absolutely horrific piece. Keep up the stellar work, eh?

Wow! Thank you for such an in-depth comment. That was incredible observation. I'm thrilled to hear the 'orphaned' concept did indeed strike the daunting cord I had strived to depict. After spending so many hours on that piece, it was easy to grow numb to the feelings I had first portrayed, so by the end I didn't know if it still carried that weight.
Thank you for taking the time to write that. It made my day.

I saw this picture and was like "should I zoom in to find the Easter egg?" Yeah....NOPE! ahaha
As Eli Roth said somewhere, and something along the lines of: "you know you were successful in making a great horror movie when you know no one saw it, because they were hiding behind their hands the entire time" If your 'horror' works continue to be this amazing then I sincerely hope that I never see another one ^__^
Good luck in the contest! I love the expression on the kid's face, and that added detail of the foot going through the bed. Gaah going to look at pictures of cute bunnies now so I don't have nightmares ><

Wow, thank you very much! I found your words of Eli Roth hilarious.
Glad you found it frightening. I used references of Alvin Schwartz's scary stories in the beginning to inspire the correct feeling.

Mew-Suika [2013-01-15 09:26:13 +0000 UTC]

Ok so searching for the mentioned 'easter egg'... Could it be the moth on the bed curtain? Could possibly be reference to Mothra? There's also a Japanese legend that if a butterfly lands on your shoulder, you're destined to die within the coming days. Could it be the creature's face? Which looks like a sheep so in reference to Black Sheep? Hmm... Oh! Could it be the face which much resembles Scream in the bottom right corner? And I think I see an eye, or something shining, within the spaces of the exposed floor boards near the child at the bottom left corner? Spider cracks in the windows could be reference to a number of spider related horror movies. The child's eyes perhaps? I don't know why but the spirals make me think Hitchcock... Was this the intentional easter egg? Oh, and by the way, fantastic piece, nightmares will duly follow it I'm sure.

*EDIT*
Re-reading over your artist's comment, and I read that it is not a horror movie reference as such, but a reference to the MAMA poster which I have failed to of seen... So ignore above ramblings about trying to find any horror movie references haha, sorry about that

Nonetheless, those were many intriguing ideas you had! You are very good at finding international easter eggs, many of which I hadn't thought to consider; I simply wanted to add character to every bit of the picture (like the cracked window panes or the child's spiraling eyes).
It's delightful to hear that some do see the little details, like that Scream-like face in the bottom right corner or the little creature in the floorboards.
Greatly appreciate your comments, very fun to read!

I'm glad you enjoyed it although it did just turn out to be nonsense hah~ And in the worlds of Sherlock; "It's the little details that matter the most." And it is a big art piece, which in turn needs to be studied to appreciate its full beauty. You obviously put a lot of time into this, and therefore it should be properly appreciated :3 And it is lovely when the little things are noticed, they're some of my favourite comments to read actually :3

Heh! Ah, my teachers used to tell me to draw nicer things when I used to doodles creepy creatures in school. I never stopped ;D

This piece if wonderful though. The bowing of the door frame there really sets off the viewer,- make the picture really active, and for me, personally makes me feel uncomfortable! Which is a good type of uncomfortable. Its a disturbing piece! XD But I love it. Those poor rats, a great addition, really. Your choices in colors are also very good, and I just adore the glow from the lamp. :3

I suppose one representation is that being orphaned, losing your parents (in any way, not limited to being devoured by a Thump), is a harrowing nightmare in itself.
