Description Encaustic mixed media, 3.5"x5" 2016

Still playing with things. Partially this is an experiment with seeing how small is too small when working with wax, partially it's experimenting with collaging/embedding (I discovered that I really do need a brayer ... or a spoon), and partially experimenting with the way the pigments moved.  It's actually a little darker in person (more than I'd meant it to be; it didn't lighten quite as much as I'd thought it might), so I adjusted the levels in photoshop so that it's more what I thought it should look like.

I like how you utilize the actual texture outcome to help create the atmosphere for the image. I'd love to learn what you do to work with wax... it looks like it can be one incredible experience!

Yeah I actually started this one with texture -- there's wrinkly teal tissue paper on the bottom. You can still see just a bit of it showing through. It doesn't take too much set-up to do wax, though the encaustic itself can get expensive if you're buying pre-mixed things.

I really like the suggestion of translucency that gives the water some additional realism.  What a neat technique.

I am really loving it! So many other things to try with it.
