Description So I'm a perfectionist about my art and I really don't like most of what I make. I know I'm not very good and I feel vulnerable about sharing the stuff I make that I don't feel meets a certain level of quality. I'm also sometimes discouraged from doing art at all because of my insecurities and my depression. I want to try to get over that perfectionism and practice more, and be more open with my art. So I'm going to attempt to do Inktober this year and share what I make, even if it's a quick piece that I don't feel is especially good.

Today I learned that calligraphy ink does not come out of brushes very well. But I chose the largest brush in a set of detail brushes I purchased for the purpose of painting D&D miniatures, so it's not a huge loss if it's permanently sparkly brown. I also learned that it's very easy to overwork the paper even with a size 1 flat, so hopefully I can be gentler with my next drawing. Along the way I figured out how to paint more lightly than the mass tone with ink. My hands shake a bit, so my lines aren't perfect and I painted outside of the lines in a couple of spots, but I did better than I often do with traditional media, so I'll count it as a win. I'm not that happy with the composition on this - I feel like the color needs to be spread out better and the outer rim of the shell should have been lighter, and maybe I should have done the smaller lines after painting in the blocks of color, but I guess part of Inktober is dealing with permanence. Maybe I'll redo some of my sketches later if I feel like bringing out a better version of them. I also kind of wish I hadn't done that cheesy lettering, but I wanted to label this as my Inktober sketchbook, so there it is.

Materials used: Herbin ink in lie de the, Aladine calligraphy ink in lapis lazuli and emerald, tombow fudenosuke brush pen - soft, number 2 pencil, kneaded eraser, synthetic size 1 flat brush, dip pen with maru nib, mixed media sketchbook.
