Description NOW! I have done a load of edits to the piece, some major some minor. Essentially I made the whole thing warmer and corrected a few minor mistakes along the way. I still consider this one of my best, even a year after I made it, but it seems I'm never truly done one-upping myself.

This was done mainly for the Re-Draw Something contest. I've always kinda been afraid of fire. Because of it's nature, it's a difficult thing to nail down artistically, in almost any medium. But keeping in theme, this shows just how far I've come in learning how to illustrate fire, as well as in perspective, posing, anatomy, and knowledge of how vector art works.

What it was based off of:

Illustrator CS5
Pen, Gradient, Blend

I've been going through your stuff and especially the ones where you do the same character multiple times- you've made a massive quality improvement over the years!

Thanks! Improvement is always the goal. I'm deprecatingly aware that my art will never be perfect, but it helps to look back and see all the progress I've made.

Isn't that the best we can hope for as we work? improvement?

Well, that and the possibility of monetization.

Lol, yeah. It's always awesome to see people make money from their work! I'm wondering since you mentioned it, would you do freelance or with a studio of some kind?

I wish. Most I get is the occasional commission. My portfolio is kinda weak. Most folks wanna see raster painting ability, and I'm still learning the ins and outs of photoshop.

Haha, I feel your pain there! I think part of it as well is that they go through your portfolio and while they see a distinct style, you only do a limited type of character and scenes (epic action shots) as well. I think you could build a very dedicated readership with a comic based on your art if you wanted, you'd just need to vary your characters and scenes a bit to adapt the styles.

I say that because you have awesome females but by comparison only a few cool male characters. I wonder, though, how the characters would interact if you put a few of them in the same room together. What kind of enemies would a character like ghostblobette have?

I wont lie. I've thought a lot about comics. Vector work doesn't lend itself very well to them though, as its quite time consuming without high amounts of simplification. The right timing and a good idea for a story would help.

As for the over-saturation of females, that's mostly the hormones talking.

GB isn't really cut-out to be a main or supporting character in a serious comic. Sure, she has her background and relationships fleshed out, but because she's rather over-powered, it wouldn't make for a good story. She's better acting as a mascot character for me, in cameos, comedy, and pin ups.

Haha, yeah I feel ya. You gotta feel like you have the proper set-up with characters and such, with background, etc. If you don't feel good about it, the comic and story won't flow as well for you. But at the end of the day, it takes committing and going with it.

As far as the women thing... I think all straight males have that... tendency? xD (it's what drew me to your portfolio xD) I only mentioned it because when you wanna monetize your skill/portfolio, you're gonna want to take your genre and explore it as much as you can. If you want to throw some ideas for your portfolio against some professional artists I've got a few that I talk with on an almost daily basis and will often stream as a group.

Aww, well, anyway, I think GB is sex as all get out xD

That is hot! In both the sexy and the temperature way ;-p I love how you did the fire. It looks alive like real fire. Her eyes, the lack of pupils to be exact, give he a mysterious feel and the smirk adds a dangerous touch (not like she wasn't dangerous already with all the fire). The background is simple and doesn't distract from the subject matter. Over all I like this very much and think you did a wonderful job. for sure!

Tried to make it look like she was made out of lava, but even if that's not really true, it's still reeeally shiny.

NocturnalZombi In reply to Croxot [2012-09-10 18:44:53 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't look like she's made out of lava more like you did a really good job making her embody fire. It's lovely, and very well done.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad I could be a source of encouragement for some people! The best advice I can give is to keep at it and try to learn the rules of art before you break them. It makes the end product much better.

I think there might've been some in Fantasia.

Or like... fire Esmerelda from that one song in Hunchback.

I don't remember ANYTHING from hunchback. Probably cause it happened during the time Disney was sucking.
