Well, it's been a while since I've talked about the edgefest that was The Ultimate Universe and I guess it's time to talk about it again or, more specifically, talk about the only two event comics set in that universe (no, crossovers like Ultimate Power and Spider-Men don't count nor do comics like Ultimate End). Going by the image above, it's clear that I prefer Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand over the pure garbage comic that was Ultimatum.

Ultimatum was originally intended to be the final story of The Ultimate Universe and Jeph Loeb was tasked with this job, even though Marvel should've let him grieve the passing of his son first before tackling both this story and Ultimates 3. Ultimatum is a crapsack edgelord pandering garbage that kills characters for the sake of being edgy and without any buildup all because of the events of Ultimates 3 that resulted in the death of Scarlet Witch, which were caused due to Ultron being jealous of her disgusting incestous relationship with Quicksilver, and Magneto swears vengeance on the world because Doctor Doom was behind everything. A lot of the core cast dies along with a few minor characters, even Spidey was supposed to die but Bendis convinced Loeb not to kill Peter yet and that led to Peter sticking around before dying in my favourite Spider-Man story of all time. I know people get pissed off when I mention that I hate Apokolips War because it's DC's equivelant to this comic but, when comparing the two, Ultimatum is much worse and more offensive to me.

Cataclysm, while not without flaws, is a massive improvement over Ultimatum because of it feeling like an actual event that will change the status quo and the stakes put before us. Galactus has come to Earth-1610 due to the events of the time travelling hijinks from another Brian Michael Bendis written event called Age Of Ultron (which never even featured Ultron so the title alone is a lie) and he merges with his 1610 counterpart and goes to consume Earth-1610, leading to The Ultimates, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Miles Morales to band together to save as many people as they can while trying to find a way to get rid of Galactus. They succeed but at the cost of the lives of Captain America and Thor, which results in SHIELD being shut down along with other things that happened afterwards.

So yeah, when it comes to the two events of The Ultimate Universe, I'll gladly reread Cataclysm over Ultimatum.
