Description The title mean "Poppy flowers"
This is my first oil painting (on a canvas).
After taking a picture of the painting, i adjusted the levels in photoshop (because there wasn't enogh light, and i didn't use the flash).

A few detail pictures can be found on my blog: [link]

Any critiques, tips and suggestions are more than welcome beacuse i have A LOT to learn

That’s really beautiful! I love the contrast between the red of the poppy and the blue background. Really makes the poppies jump out at you.

One thing I would say is not to be scared of using too much paint. Oil points are fantastic for mixing on the canvas rather than making colours on a pallet try painting the base colour then adding paint right to the canvas to mix shadows/highlights on the canvas. Another point (though this may be a fault of you camera than of your work) try using the full range of shades right from white to black, people are always worried about making shadows to dark but it’s good to have strong contrast in art.

Other than that this pictures is stunning. The shapes and colours are lovely!

Thank you for the tips I'll try to use more paint next time (yes, i have the habbit of mixing the colours on the pallet, rather than on the canvas and i want to change that because I like it when the paint builds up and the painting looks a bit 3D)

I'll take into consideration to use the range of shades from white to black (on this painting, i did not use pure black and white at the bottom and top of the canvas).

Thank you once again!

yeah I tend to use Acrylics rather than oil paint but it works with both and gives a nice texture when it builds up.

yeah. I did notice that. you can use the same in different areas like on the flowers with a highlight at the tip being pure white and darkest point being black.

your welcome! i hope I've helped and good luck in all your future art!

The blending in the background is well done and I love the fact that the very top of the background is not blended as smoothly to imitate the texture of clouds. The stem seems to be too dark and the res is a tad too bright due to the immense contrasts between the red, green and blue. More shadows and highlights could be added to create the texture and shape of the petals on the flower e.g. shadow behind the petal closest to up will create a more 3D effect. The composition is good but more highlights in general can be added to the painting to liven the poppies and show their lively nature.

The colors and shading is beautifully done. The background is nicely drawn, I like the transition from the dark blue to the light sky. I like the details o the petals. Both the flowers and the buds looks accurate and realistic. Good choice of colors.
