Description From the Astro CityΒ books...not even his epoxy-squirting rifle can save the masked villain Glue-Gun from being tangled in the trademark streamers of Jack-In-The-Box,the harlequin of righteousness!

I really like the way this one turned out;since Jack-In-The-Box was inspired by Steve Ditko's character of Spiderman,a dramatic angle was needed. This wasn't copied from anything...I just filled my mind with images from every Spiderman comic I've ever read.

Awesome! We could definitely use a character like this today, as i'm sick of clowns being constantly demonised in media

Yes....I'm not quite sure when clowns started being thought of in negative ways....I even discussed it in a journal entry.
Thanks for the !

Ever since the Joker basically. The whole evil clown thing is just flogged to death and I think the only thing that even comes close to a "heroic" clown is Harley Quinn, and that's just a character who pretty much changes sides with every appearance she makes

That far back? I'm not sure. In the fifties,Kellogg's cereal boxes actually had professional circus clowns on them. It might've started with the infamous John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer who actually was a clown.

I should reiterate that the character of Jack-In-The-Box was actually inspired by the creations of Steve Ditko, who created Spiderman. I'm guessing they wanted a similar masked hero, one who somersaulted over rooftops and nabbed criminals with seemingly devil-may-care abandon. Basing him on another insect species may have been too on-the-nose; even patterning him after, say,a rabbit or a kangaroo might not've been what Ross and Busiek were after.

I remember Steve Ditko, he was with DC and sadly in 2018, we lost him and Stan Lee

A great visual memory man. Plus it's nice to see a clown in a positive light

Yes...unlike a certain arch-nemesis to a certain bat-garbed vigilante, and a certain psychopathic Pagliacci-inspired antihero whose murder opened a graphic novel, Jack-In-The-Box is the only clown-inspired hero in the comics that I know of.

As do I...imagine my surprise when I discovered, despite all the superhero-themed groups on this site, there wasn't one for Astro City...so I started one.

Thanks for the !
