Not sure I'd ever use those myself though, since I'm not really the biggest fan of the JRPG style combat systems!

That's probably true, although I'm not familiar with Ruby / scripting for RPGMaker and would probably use a different engine for that D:

If I am not mistaken, what we do in RPG Maker is not actually coding,Β but we are
entering commands and them the program writes the code for us. Something like
that.

Well I would say anything where you write - instead of, for instance, programming via visual scripting might qualify as coding. After all, anything above machine-level code works the way you just described.
(I sadly went to university for computer science, at least I should remember some things still) I'm not completely sure about all the categorizations there might be for these things, however.
