Description I always had a soft spot for Fossas for whatever reason - everything about them is weird. Weird name, weird appearance (catlike and yet anything else but a cat), weird anatomy (hence their latin name), weird sexuality features (females go through a fake masculization in their first years) - and boy, they sure do some weird sounds. Awesome critters.

This guy appeared on paper while randomly scribbling some Fossas. I kinda liked him, so here you go with Dean Prior (yeah, i named him after an english village).

I don't know yet who he is. We'll see.

I saw this and was curious about what sounds a fossa makes but all I can find are videos people took of fossa mating...where did you find out fossa sounds? (what does the fossa say  )

They do mate as well somewhere in this video but you can hear them making their sounds throughout the whole thing (yes, it is that weird "Ork Ork Aaaark Wäää")

I get its good that their reproducing (since theres only around 3000 left in the wild) but why record them doing it? that's the only thing I don't get.

Fossas aren't canids, they're euplerids.

Gorgeous, Ms. Culpeo! The colors are quite smooth and those eyes of his are beautiful! I had always been curious about Fossa but I never got around to learning anything about them. I'll have to brush up now that you've adopted one into your lovely slew of characters, and I look forward to seeing what you do with him. If I might ask, what did you draw this with?

Sorry, really cheap Madagascar joke

I don't think I noticed just how unique and beautiful these creatures are, very sleek and sinewy, perfect hunters

This sheet really endears them to the viewers

Culpeo-Fox In reply to Erkhyan [2013-08-19 12:03:11 +0000 UTC]

How is that possible? You're even from Madagascar. 8D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Erkhyan In reply to Culpeo-Fox [2013-08-19 12:14:07 +0000 UTC]

Well… we don’t have them in zoos. We could only see them in their natural habitat, which isn’t quite accessible to us city-dwellers—and even when we go there, they’re shy animals who flee at the first sign of an approaching human. So, the closest I ever came to seeing a fossa was when I gathered a handful bloody feathers it had left behind, more than 15 years ago.

"Masculization"?  How so? (these species were NEVER taught in my schools back in the late 90s, early aughts, so I don't know very much, I'm afraid )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Culpeo-Fox In reply to MiraKHall [2013-08-19 01:07:04 +0000 UTC]

Read about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossa_%2…

It's pretty unique among mammals and the species itself rather unknown in general.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MiraKHall In reply to Culpeo-Fox [2013-08-19 05:34:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh, it's like the spotted hyena, then.  Female hyenas are known to have those as well

Hmmm, do any of the biologists know whether or not these guys have rough tongues like a cat?  That might separate it from the felis genus altogether (although I'm not well-versed with both the mongoose and civets family in contrast to my total nerd-dom with big and small cats )

Culpeo-Fox In reply to Marybugs [2013-08-19 00:55:29 +0000 UTC]
