Though never called such in the series, Mumm-Ra would be a Naga - a mythical half human half snake entity whose only weakness was that it could not stand the sight of its own reflection.

Well if you looked like Mumm-Ra it is very doubtful that you would want to look at your reflection too. Maybe he looked better during Second Earth.

Or first-Earth. my private head canon puts Third Earth as being millions of years in the future, when either natural evolution or deliberate genetic manipulation or plain old uplifting created all the humanoid/animal hybrids seen on that show, and that the people of Thundera had their feline ancestors from First Earth.

Well that might not be too far off. I was recently watching the rarely seen Promotional Reel of the show that was used to try and sell it to advertisers and other people. This is what it has to say about "Third Earth".
"But Earth is not the Earth we all know, it is actually the Third Earth. The survivor of two unimaginable holocausts which have returned our planet to a primitive state."
Lot of early artwork featured in this 13 minute presentation and also some information about the show that probably didn't remain when it completed production.

Yes, I had imagined something similar - with Mumm-Ra directly responsible for both upheavals.

This is a really good sketch of Mumm-Ra by Mr. Starr.
