Hello! I found your piece in ProjectComment.

There is so much to love about this piece, I’ll have to apologize for not offering much in the way of suggested improvements.

First off, the way the characters are interacting is really well done – the weight of the two women against one another feels real, and the expressions of the merfolk convey their personalities and feelings toward the women well. I like how all of them have their own looks; they’re not the same faces with different hair and clothes, but rather they have their own individual characteristics. This makes the scene feel much more real.

The way you worked with the lighting is fantastic as well – I’d imagine it’d be very easy to screw that up, but you gave it a soft rendering that both feels real and is gentle on the eyes, giving the whole piece a very soft, cozy feel. The only suggestion I’d make in regard to that would be for you to consider showing how the light would play through the water in the right jar – there could be waves and shimmers of light on the tall woman’s thigh and stomach, and on the platform next to her as the light refracted through the water and jar (I think… maybe test it out in real life, first?).

As far as the composition of the piece goes, my only suggestion for possible improvement would be that the tall woman feels a bit too twisted toward the viewer. I understand why the girl on the left would be turned as she is to make eye contact (sort of), but it doesn’t feel as natural with the girl on the right. She might look more relaxed if she were more in profile… but that’s just my opinion.

I really like how you set all of these characters up, right down to how the curly-haired girl is holding the straight-haired merman, and vice-versa on the right. There’s a well done balance throughout this picture for the most part, and it comes across really well.

Oh, and the background! I love how simply you did the background. It’s perfect in regard to enhancing the setting while, at the same time, letting the characters take precedence. Great decision, there.

The concept overall is really cool.  As a kid, I loved collecting cards and such (I grew up at the peak of the Pokemon, Yugioh, Duelmasters phase of the 2000s), and I like the idea of a world where people collect mermaids and mystical sea critters.  Something about that, in and of itself is just.....I dunno, super fascinating to me.  I like the dichotomy between the two girls, they have their own poses, their own clothes, their own attitude, and style, which just really makes them stand out together.  It's a really cool contrast, and while they're clearly close, you can tell the differences between the two of them.  I like how the girl on the left is so very Shirley Temple, and the one on the right has more a 90's emo look to her.  The two merman-type pets look interesting as well.  They too have their own contrast and seem to complement their owners in different ways.  I particularly like the teal merman on the right and the "Oh you!" look he's giving the dark-haired girl.  I think you're sister pegged the concept perfectly:  but it still sounds interesting enough to me, in any case.  I don't know if it's idea for a comic or not, but it seems like something that could really pan out.  Summer, sunshine, and mermaids do indeed sound like a great combo!  This is in any case a really cool concept, and I like this a lot.

I really like the idea! The hair on the smaller girl is super cute and I love the highlighting and shading here. I can get kinda of an idea of a story with this drawing. Also I love the designs for the mermen.
