Description
It was the rain that washed away the scent of ash and flour. If not for the storm, Mei wasn’t sure she’d ever get the smell out of her nose. Ash and flour and blood.
Mei had messed up. She’d been doing so well, oh so very well, and she’d messed up. The day, her day as a Heart, her day as Moe of Heats, had been going so very well.
She’d met so many different canines. Different in many ways, in all forms, temperament; it was funny to think a stereotype for these differences could all fall under ‘Heart’. Funny, she was a Joker who believed stereotypes about Suites.
Things had been going so well. Who’d have thought that a little ash and flour, a little red cloth, and suddenly the world was open? There were strangers in the street willing to guild a lonely wolf through a confusing city, help with shopping, and be friends. Who’d have thought that Mei was so bad at being a Suit? So many who Mei met today figured her out, so many said the same thing ‘It didn’t matter.’ A canine was a canine, despite what symbols did or did not mark their fur. So many said that, but then there were so many that Mei had to wonder; would they be this friendly if they knew?
She’d met some of Heart’s Royal Numbers, and they seemed as normal as the next.
There had even been a Spade, Diamond, and Club that crossed her path.
She’d seen not one, but Two pairs of eyes even odder than her own. A blue eye and a red eye, then a number? Skykid had been an odd sight, an odd dog, and somehow Mei had come to enjoy his companionship. But what of Uri? One pink eye one red? This dog had been a vendor, sweet in temperament and so docile, not even Mei’s high strung tendencies and wariness could find fault with him.
Both dog’s eyes were a fascination for Mei, beautiful, different, and both of them carried their oddity as if it made them special. Two different colored eyes. But it DID make them special, did it? A Suite mark forgave odd eyes and made them badges of pride.
How unfair.
And what of that Messanger? Mile was it? Or Ritsu, another Numbered Royalty. Well . . . .
Then there was the Ace. She’d been glass to him, hadn’t she? Mei had proven to Artimis that she was a Joker without trying, her actions where always the wrong ones, but no, he’d let her go. The warning had rang in her ears for hours,
“. . . But if you cause any trouble..... I'll find you. . . ”
Mei believed him.
But this day was a trial right?
A few seemed to figure her out, Marienne of Spades had been a clever one, while Mei hoped she hadn’t confirmed the wolf’s suspicions. While the messenger was one of the harder conversations to get through, maybe Mei left a good impression?
Mei’s shopping brought her to a Dimond, a kind dog and Cyril had given her far better a deal than he needed to. In fact, he didn’t seem to recognize her from last time . . . .the Spade ball had brought her in contact with this merchant too, but this desgise seemed to work, after all, he didn’t even seem to suspect.
He wasn’t the only one fooled. A pair of green eyes among a sea of red had scared Mei, but Slyfer was the Club citizen living in Hearts. He boyfriend was it? Yes. A Heart and a Club. Together. The very idea . . . . it wasn’t so bad actually . . . . . .She’d met the boyfriend as well. Daniel was an advisor to the throne and possibly the most idealistic fox Mei had ever run across. He wanted to pass laws helping the Jokers? Mei didn’t know how to take that, laugh or maybe . . . a spark of hope?
And then there was the Assassin. That was when everything went wrong. Mei had just been trying to escape the overwhelming crowds. She had just wanted to go home, day done, a success for the most part, just wanted to think things over and . . . . but no . . . . .
It was an alley-way just like any other, but no, there was a pair of teenagers doing something . . . something shady.
Mei had wanted to pass them by, wanted to go on, but no, the wolf made a jump at her. Her! Who looked like a Heart! And he wanted to fight!? Mei had been going to awnser that call when the Assassin stepped in, Canasta had frightened the pair off, but by then it had been too late.
Mei had been teetering on the edge all day, but fear was not enough to push her over.
Anger, frustration, confusion, such conflicting feelings at being attacked by some young upstart, had done it. Fear. Yes. But the turmoil in Mei’s head was only amplified by the assassin.
And after her day had gone so well.
After all the different folks, all the words, the kindness, even the warning from the Ace, after all of it, it didn’t matter.
Mei had snapped.
It didn’t matter. The Suits, they were all the same. They who attacked their own kind, who couldn’t see the world beyond their own noses. The small minds who put her down, built her up, only to stomp all over any idea she thought she’d ever had.
She thought she could have a life with Alaude? A Home in Hearts?
Why was she so stupid?
Mei had tried to remove the assassin and failed, Canasta had escaped just as the teenagers had returned with a hound of the militia.
The idiots.
One of the teens, a young coyote, was dead in moments.
The dog of the military had attacked, sending the other teen away for help. Mei’s clothing was shredded, blood ran down her side, but this hound too fell to her.
Mei left the two bodies in the alley just as it started to rain.
And she ran.
And ran.
What had she done?
The anger melted, the heat coursing through her cooled, the fuzz in her mind faded, Mei was back, another two bodies added to the Two-Faced Joker’s account.
An innocent, stupid teen at the wrong place at the wrong time and a service-dog of Hearts, just trying to protect a citizen.
Dead.
Mei escaped to the forest, the rain was on her side, hiding most of her scent, washing away the ash, the flour, and the blood.
Mei abandoned her baskets of groceries not far from the city, her scarf and hat soon followed. She hadn’t meant to cause trouble. She hadn’t meant to loose control. She hadn’t meant to mess up.
She had to leave. Get out of here. Going home now would endanger Alaude.
The Assassin had tracked Mei to the Spades border and although the fox failed to fulfill her duty and kill the Joker, Mei and Canasta went their separate ways.
Finally hidden within the safety of Spade’s forest, Mei’s run came to a stop. The red cloak was soaked, the wolf’s fur dark and damp.
She’d have to get her claw back from Alaude eventually. She’d have to get her blacks and greys back. But for now; one corner of the cloak is ripped off and fashioned into a make-shift mask. Mei would have to get her old one back later.
Later.
When it was safe to return to Hearts and retrieve her worldly possetions from Alaude. When the darkness had receded back to it's pit and she could think clearly. When that hated part of her had slipped to the back of her mind.
When would that be?
She didn’t know, but for now Mei needed to stop thinking. The memories of snapping where always filled with high emotion, death, and fun. The after effects was always this exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion as well as physical. Mei just wanted to sleep. She wanted to forget all of the kind faces she’d met today. She wanted to forget the stench of blood. She wanted to forget the words spoken today.
Even Aluade’s words.
”You need to be Mei.”
Mei was a mistake. Mei was a Joker. She needed to stop pretending to be anything else. No Hearts. No, she couldn't do that, it was silly of her to try. Maybe there was something wrong with Jokers. Maybe there was a reason they were pushed out.
She wanted to forget it all. Just for a little bit. Just a moment’s peace. A moment when the fear didn’t haunt her and the mistakes.
No.
Just sleep.
Maybe things would be better when she awoke.
Ha.
No.
But when she awoke she’d be willing to deal with it.
A new camp, food, maybe steal some cloth and get rid of this stupid red cloak. Maybe.
But not til morning.
She’ll deal with it all then.

AHHHHHHH!!!! This is so late! I'm sorry! This was supposed to be a wrap-up type thing from Heart For a Day so that people would know what all happened and where Mei is now.
Long Story Short: Mei had a really awesome day, her views on Suites certainly was shifting, then messed up, snapped, killed two NPCs, and is now in Spades hiding. She is dressed in reds now and will be until she can get back and get her blacks and greys from Alaude. Mei is currently unarmed (her knives were lost in the fight with Canasta) and pretty mentally unstable.
This post is sort of to outline Mei's mindset right now and while she her views are pretty clouded by emotion and her own biases, this is where she is right now.
