Description Today's guest artist is webcomicker Gideon Frost. I'd highly recommend his strip Robots in the Walls .

Now about Rise of the Planet of The Apes. When I first heard the concept, I thought we had finally reached the bottom of the barrel. I mean, really? We're that devoid of ideas that we're doing prequels to B-movies from forty years ago? And then I heard the title and I discovered that the bottom of the barrel is even further down than I had thought. And then I saw the trailer and discovered that the bottom of the barrel has a trap door in it, and if go through that trap door we find ourselves in a place that's not half as bad as I would have thought.

Am I crazy or does this movie actually look OK? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that James Franco has a fucked up Midas touch where he can apply enough pressure to a lump of shit that it changes--if not into a diamond--at least into Cubic Zirconia, which is of course fake but pretty nonetheless. I'm thinking of Spider-Man 3 here. I'm also thinking of his ridiculous invisible art idea, which you can read about here .

So, yeah, here's to the mind fuck that is our Back to the Future/Forward to the Past culture.

I didn't know that. You think Planet of the Apes was considered A-level when it was released?

Does the Planet of The Apes need a reboot?

(Rise of The Apes dose amazingly well)

Told ya.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and admit that I'm wrong on this one. In a world where movies so often butcher good ideas, they somehow took a crap idea and made it good.

I saw the trailer and immediately thought: there aren't enough apes in the zoo for that to even hypothetically happen.

Right. I wonder how they recruit for the Ape army? An add on myspace? I think not.

It's more than a prequel it's a reboot which I think is amazing because the series was kind of cheesy. Even the remake with Mark Wahlberg was just ok. I think this movie will be a great foundation for a series that our generation can appreciate.

CuttingRoom In reply to Razgriz-Ghost22 [2011-07-22 02:03:34 +0000 UTC]

But why not do something original instead? I mean, why tie it to a movie that it probably doesn't want to be associated with?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Razgriz-Ghost22 In reply to CuttingRoom [2011-07-22 19:39:39 +0000 UTC]

Because there is an opportunity to reset the series so that it may gain a new following?

CuttingRoom In reply to Razgriz-Ghost22 [2011-07-25 00:37:45 +0000 UTC]

A new following of the old series?

Razgriz-Ghost22 In reply to CuttingRoom [2011-07-25 23:04:52 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, more than likely they'll reboot the whole series once there is a bigger fanbase.

CuttingRoom In reply to Razgriz-Ghost22 [2011-07-26 03:34:25 +0000 UTC]

Which brings me to my previous question of why not do something original?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Razgriz-Ghost22 In reply to CuttingRoom [2011-07-26 14:37:02 +0000 UTC]

You know what, they have money end of story. That's why they're making the film because they have money and can probably make more money by making said movie.

CuttingRoom In reply to Razgriz-Ghost22 [2011-07-27 16:50:48 +0000 UTC]

Who's they?

While I'm not a fan of James Cameron, he's showed that you can make ridiculously successful movies that aren't adaptions, sequels, prequels, requels, reboots, or remakes of previously seen stories. Why aren't more people doing that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Razgriz-Ghost22 In reply to CuttingRoom [2011-07-27 17:25:41 +0000 UTC]

The film-makers. I was just tired of the circular argument, IE.

Why make it

Because it's a reboot

Why

Because it can start a new ground for the series

Why...

The movie is being made as a starting point for a new planet of the apes series as far as I can tell. If it wasn't planet of the apes what would it be? Ape Planet?

CuttingRoom In reply to Razgriz-Ghost22 [2011-07-28 19:36:55 +0000 UTC]

I'm not 100% positive, but I imagine the film makers behind this project had nothing to do with the original. And all I'm saying is that rather than generating their own ideas, they went back to some particularly dated source material, and I think that's lame. I'd love to see more risk taking in Hollywood.

...wasnt this movie already made... like 30 years ago or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CuttingRoom In reply to sordcooper2 [2011-07-06 20:27:31 +0000 UTC]

The original was 30 years ago. This is a prequel. And there's something really weird about doing a prequel to a movie that old. The past ends up looking more futuristic than the future.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sordcooper2 In reply to CuttingRoom [2011-07-06 21:04:07 +0000 UTC]

...no, no it cant be a prequel, because the original franchise told the story of the ape future, how it got blown up, how 3 apes got sent to the past before getting offed before having their child dumped with a circus, how the sentient apes raised up against humanity, then how history kinda splintered off from the original time line... i mean shit its pretty friggen self contained so this shit would have to be just another re-make!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CuttingRoom In reply to sordcooper2 [2011-07-07 11:16:54 +0000 UTC]

Weird. So it's a closed loop? Which movie was the time travel in?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sordcooper2 In reply to CuttingRoom [2011-07-07 14:16:33 +0000 UTC]

the time travel was the first 3, astronauts go to the future int he first two, apes go to the past in the third, the remake is just kinda dumb all because of one very, VERY dumb twist at the end

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CuttingRoom In reply to sordcooper2 [2011-07-07 22:08:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I actually spent some real time thinking on that twist, and it made no kinds of sense unless he went back in time instead of forward.

SavvyRed [2011-07-05 16:13:57 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, but this prequel looks terrible.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CuttingRoom In reply to SavvyRed [2011-07-06 20:24:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm certainly not going to defend it. The idea is so bad that the execution would have to be brilliant in order to make the movie mediocre.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SavvyRed In reply to CuttingRoom [2011-07-07 02:55:06 +0000 UTC]

That is so true. There's just something about a group of apes taking over the world that screams "cheesy!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CuttingRoom In reply to SavvyRed [2011-07-07 11:17:21 +0000 UTC]

Right. For me the real crime is making a prequel to a movie that's older than I am.

ElectricGecko [2011-07-01 01:07:08 +0000 UTC]

Groan. How can they STILL be making Planet of the Apes movies? STILL? Who found this concept appealing? Ever?

CuttingRoom In reply to ElectricGecko [2011-07-04 10:26:39 +0000 UTC]

Amen, but I tell you, the trailer looks strangely appealing to me.

mjtfreeze [2011-07-01 00:03:14 +0000 UTC]

It looks good, I just hope they stick to the rules of the story....i.e humans get f*cked over in the end. I don't want it to have a hollywood ending, where the humans win or something. Cuz I can see them doing that...which would make this prequel/reboot/remake/re-imagining pointless
