For the last decade or so Brian Michael Bendis’s Ultimate Spider-Man has basically been Dawson’s Creek with superpowers. That’s what I LIKE about it. It was one of my favorite super hero books of the 2000’s and I’m looking forward to where it goes from here.

As for the racists that came out of the woodwork to be awful about the changing face of Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe? I don’t know, man.

Aside from being taught not to be a piece of shit by excellent parents, one of the key reasons I can’t even understand where racists come from is comic books. I grew up on a steady, heavy diet of X-Men and Spider-Man comics and I saw them protecting a world that hated and feared them and I saw how that weighed on good people doing their best to do good things in a sometimes not-so-good world. And I never sat down and said to myself “I’ll never be a bigot!” It literally never occurred to me that hating people because of their skin tone or sexuality or super powers was an option. So when I see people getting all racisty over the very medium that taught me so well to be kind and accepting my mindhole explodes and I just think, clearly they were reading something else growing up. Maybe the KKK makes comics. I don’t know. But Wolverine and Storm and Xavier and Spider-Man taught us better than this.

Bigotry makes us small and sad and less than we are. Comics are silly and spandexy and face-punchy, but they are also, very, very often morality tales. They’ve got things to say about how we can be more. Let’s listen.

Miles Morales sucks. It's so annoying how he defeats every villain with his Venom Blast, sometimes it doesn't even make sense how his powers work and how they can disrupt the powers of Electro and Green Goblin so easily! It's clear Brian Bendis (TERRIBLE WRITER) just lets him win against impossible odds for good publicity.

Miles is the worst excuse for a PC character, followed by Sam Alexander and Kamala Khan.

You want diversity? Instead push for the existing minority characters (Black Panther, Storm, Neal Shaara, Omega Sentinel, Armor, Shang-Chi, Oya, Evan Sabahnur, Jubilee, Wyatt Wingfoot, Dani Moonstar, Sunspot, Warpath, Luke Cage, Firebird, Sooraya Qadir, Spyke, Cecilia Reyes, etc.) to receive more attention from writers and readers alike.

Doing this shit of replacing popular white characters with minorities only hurts the existing minority characters and makes them forgotten with the rest of the C and D-lister characters.

I figure Miles is like the Kyle Rayner of the Marvel universe: he's awesome and everyone loves him but the fans are pissed at whatever circumstances delivered them into the universe.

Hopefully it will never end the way Kyle Rayner ended, with the company deciding that since fans don't like the way this character was introduced it means every fan hates the character and so bring back the old guy and never bring him up again.

I can't imagine the voice of Darth Vader being done by none other than James Earl Jones; imagine the idea at that Lucas considered Orson Welles for the part, and Mel Blanc to do the voice-work of C-3P0?

I have nothing against the race of the character, in fact I'm half Hispanic also, it's simply the fact that I feel that He's just not spider man. I grew up with the Peter Parker Spider-Man. It breaks my heart to think that my favorite hero would be replaced.
Plus I think that part of racism is the fact that everyone cares so much about not being racist, if we could just stop looking at the appearances of people, whether their black, white or purple, it shouldn't matter, we should see people for their personality for who they are, and not what.

I grew up with Peter Parker as well, and I was really really attached to the Ultimate version of him, which made his death extraordinarily powerful for me. That last line to Aunt May? Whew... I cried like a baby. Peter Parker's life and death was one of the most beautifully told stories I've ever read. And I read it for ten years, man. I'll miss it for sure, but the fact that it's done doesn't diminish it. I think it makes it stronger.

What's racist, is the fact that they killed off Peter Parker to replace him with this wannabe kid who is half black-half hispanic. It seems like the only reason they killed Pete off was to replace with him with some douchebag who goes around trying to impersonate him.
Peter Parker ALWAYS HAS and ALWAYS WILL BE, Spider Man.

Yeah, white people are really getting the short end of the stick these days. Even other white people (like Brian Michael Bendis) hate us. If things continue much longer, we're going to have to set aside our lives of luxury and actually do something about it.

I'm not racist, but you gotta admit that making him Black AND hispanic and the same time is kinda forced .
Now, I didn't read the comic-books, so I can't judge the character himself , but the idea was still interesting .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CuttingRoom In reply to jihef03 [2013-04-13 19:23:37 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't seem forced to me. I mean, when Peter Parker emerged it was unheard of to have a nerdy superhero. He was the lowest of the low on the social totem pole. Now, people of mixed races face that same challenge, as evidenced by people's outrageous responses to his existence. But mixed ethnicities is a huge issue. Look at our president.

jihef03 In reply to CuttingRoom [2013-04-13 19:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, to be honest, I'm not american, but I guess that Barack Obama faces those issues once and a while .

Back to Miles Morales, aside from the mixed race I pointed out, I was just little sarcastic, but it's true your argument stands .
I never read his stories, but his existence doesn't bother me at all .^^ At least you can tell there is evolution in the Ultimate Universe , a new period . Quality writing is to seek now, and maybe his are good , I don't know .

I'm not upset about the fact that the new spider-man is black/Portuguese, but the fact that they killed one off my favorite incarnation of Peter because (and this is just what I heard) that we have a black president now and that comics need more black heroes. If that is the case why did they have to kill off a favorite and instead just make a new hero for the mainstream.

CuttingRoom In reply to kyubiman [2012-07-22 20:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Whoever said they created the new Spider-man because of Obama is an idiot. It's not like they put a cowboy hat on him and gave him a drawl when Bush was president.

Trying to say everyone against this new spider-man are all racists is kind lazy. And the argument of he's the ultimate spider man not the amazing one is lazy as well. I never read the amazing spider-man i read ultimate spider-man because i liked the story more. If they needed an African or biracial super hero they couldn't make a new one? This whole thing is lazy and kind of offensive to caucasians. And don't get me wrong i love the changes Ultimate did to Nick Fury. And i'm sure i would be more open to this spider-man if ultimate started with him.

However this is just plain usurping a well known character to try get new readers. And it sucks, they could have taken more time and made a better original character rather than steal a character. Which is all this new character is doing.

CuttingRoom In reply to Sceth-Arkis [2012-07-06 01:02:02 +0000 UTC]

First off, IT'S A COMIC. It's a joke, just a joke. It's not intended to have all of the nuance of a well-constructed thesis on racism in America. It's just a joke.

That being said, you've managed to misread a simple two-panel joke. Nowhere in it (or the commentary) does it say that "everyone against this new spider-man are all racists." We don't live in absolutist statements like that.

As to your last paragraph, I wholeheartedly disagree.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sceth-Arkis In reply to CuttingRoom [2012-07-06 01:34:22 +0000 UTC]

I know it's just a comic and a joke. However, your little two panel comic is touching on what a lot of people are using to discredit anyone that is critical of this new spider-man. Oh he must be racist since he doesn't like this new spider-man. And you are of course welcome to disagree with my last paragraph. But, it is the theft of a classical character. They didn't even have an original idea for how he got his powers. And i find it insulting, lets kill the white boy so we can have a biracial spider-man. Like i said, if they wanted a biracial spider man they should have started with one, not kill him off ten years later to shoehorn in a new, younger biracial spider-man. I'm kind of hoping this new comic falls flat, but not because I'm racist, but because i am a fan of ultimate Peter Parker.

CuttingRoom In reply to Sceth-Arkis [2012-07-06 10:01:46 +0000 UTC]

I think it's important to note that a lot of people critical of the new Spider-Man ARE racist. The filth that some people have been spewing is disgusting.

The other argument--the one that you're presenting--isn't racist, but I disagree with it. The condemnation that Marvel is only doing it for the money seems silly. Of course, they are. They're a business. Their business happens to be selling good stories, and with their decades of experience, they believe they can tell better stories to more people with this new Spider-man. They believe that a bi-racial Spider-Man today captures an audiences attention the way that outsider Peter Parker did fifty years ago.

As to the idea of starting off with Miles as Spider-Man, that would mean losing ten years of great stories. Why would we want that? Is the idea that since he's going to die, we don't want him to live? We all die. And if we're lucky we get to live a little before hand.

Lastly, I loved the last ten years of stories. And my favorite story was the last one. I thought Bendis did a really stellar job with that one. Peter's last line even made me cry a bit.

Sceth-Arkis In reply to CuttingRoom [2012-07-06 19:56:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah i agree that there are a lot of racists making them selves heard on the issue and it makes me sick reading what they have to say.

I Just feel The ultimate Peter Parker was starting to get in to a good stride and his story ended way too soon. But, i suppose i should have been prepared for it. Nothing in ultimate marvel is a sure thing. Ultimate Characters die more often then teenagers in a Friday the 13th movie. A lot of characters have been replaced, i just didn't think spider-man would be one of them lol.

CuttingRoom In reply to Sceth-Arkis [2012-07-06 20:28:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hear that. I'm really looking forward to doing a nice slow re-read of my old trades. I figure, if I read one trade a month, it'll take me about two years to get through the whole stack. Then, I can take a year or two off and re-read them all again.

And I really think Bendis is going to do some cool things with this new kid.

I've found that as I get older I'm less attached to characters than I am to writers. For example, I'm not particularly attached to Mystique, but BKV's run on her was a hole heck of a lot of fun. Then, I followed him over to his non-Marvel titles rather than following Mystique through whatever her story is.

Honestly, I think this new Spider-Man seems okay and just wait to see him in action, but I still feel mad they dare kill Ultimate Peter Parker. He was one of the best character in the whole Ultimate Universe. So I don't hate the new guy, but I do hate the fact they kill Pete to replace him. Especially in Ultimate cause this mean they won't bring him back.
