Well that explainsΒ a few things. It's funny that even the Avengers seem to think he's more crazy and has something seriously mentally wrong with him than evilΒ or a serious threat. He attempted suicide at the end of the first Thor movie, I think there's something seriously wrong with him (I actually haveΒ theory that he could be Bipolar.)

In all seriousness, this is true and probably explains a lot about Loki's lunacy in The Avengers. Tom himself has said that the guy went through some serious shit, "like someone getting lost in the rainforest for years." Small wonder he came out the other side looking and acting feral.
