It's because of the fact that charge (mounted or dismounted) was more effective with spear (in this case naginata) than with sword.
I'm not entirely sure, but I think at least that samurai warrior first used his spear (when he lost it or it broke) and then moved on using katana (or tachi), so that was also one of the reasons why.
Personally I chose naginata because of the fact that the picture might have reminded too much of one scene in The Last Samurai (here is the [link] to the picture if you don't know it).
I would also like to point out that he has katana and wakizashi, but they both are cased (on the right from his waist, you can see the grips).
