There's something bold about this, like he's saying "This is who I am. Take it or leave it," and the background is really just that, a background for the subject, like the background is a part of his personality as well.

Have you ever used gels on your flashes? A warm gel on this would have been just perfect to make the foreground and background mesh.

Yes, I did quite some experiments with gels on my flashes. But not back then when I shot this one ^^
I think the only pics in my gallery where I used a gel on my flash is in 'backspin' (a blue one) and in 'grape meets water' (a diffusion gel). Thanks for your kind words
