Description This is an album cover I shot for the band Nico Vega - they are having their EP "Choose Your Words Poorly" release next Thursday (23rd Feb) at the Troubadour in Hollywood. If you're in LA and you can make it, I'll see you there.

Please note, as with most of my work, there is no digital manipulation or trickery here - they were actually painted! The idea conveyed here is censorship/the absence of freedom. The black painted line continues throughout the whole CD insert.

Aja has an unforgeable voice which once I confused it with Karen-O's. Great CD-covers about the band.

Yes, you're right. To me the voice also sounds a little like the one from The Kills singer, and a little Janis Joplin too.

Cool. Nice to see photographers spend the time to interact with the set and models in a tangible way. I love digital of course, but for some images, there is no substitute for a hands on approach. Nice balance to the composition here.

This is fantastic! The whole concept is phenomenol, and it is executed to perfection. Well done.

Isn't it amazing how simplicity says much more!

I like the idea behind this and the statement is clearly captured and executed....I like this a lot! a indeed!

this one is great. reminds me at the works of gΓΌnter brus (these self- mutilation- series, I wonder if you know them), but you take these similar aesthetics in a whole new direction, what fits very well.
btw... which type of colour did you use?

Cyril-Helnwein In reply to DeLaV [2006-02-16 20:36:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know the series by GΓΌnter Brus... it's definitely similar, except this is horizontal and not vertical... hehe. The paint I used was just ordinary water-based glossy black from the hardware store, washes off easy with soap and water.

yes you're right, I was just thinking about the straight line and the colour...I did some photos a while ago, involving black indian ink... you just can't imagine the terrible smell ( it was really horrible, I don't know where it came from, and I still think that it was no ink but some crude oil). that's why I asked which type you used, just for the next time

Ah ok... well I don't know much about india ink but I think it's made from carbon...
