Description You can call me a smartarse for putting this in waterscapes - but it does say the water can be flowing or standing, so I'm going to assume that frozen counts too.

I'd really like some constructive feedback on this piece. Since the pic needs to be fairly high-contrast in order to stand out, I thought about doing some very mild manipulation - I've touched up the existing image very little. Any tips from the really great photographers out there at all?

For anybody interested in the shot, it was taken under the Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand, and the tunnel here was big enough to crawl through. I just loved the way the ice darkened towards the centre of the tunnel, and the way the folding sheets of ice to the sides gives the picture an abstract feel. Hope you like it!

This is quite the pic. It's a shame the DA watermark was placed in such a way as to create image confusion.

BUT! It is a stunning photo

I know - it'd be nice if I could move the watermark to a different part of the image. I just like knowing that my work is more secure this way!

Thanks though - I'm glad you like it

This is really amazing, Again, the choice of deviant art watermark is slightly annoying, as it covers the centre of your picture, where your main subject is.
I really like the piece, I think it really stands out!

An amazing shot, and almost a piece of abstract art in itself! Not a sight many of us will see in person, for sure.

I think it's great the way it is, took me the longest time to see the image for what it was. I stared at it for a while because I couldn't figure it out, then read a bit of the description, saw that it was ice, stared at it some more, then had to read the rest to see that it was a tunnel, lol. (It sort of looked like some surface ice on a slow moving river that had been broken and foam had built up in the hole? Vaguely, anyway.)

To get to the point, very cool shot, I love the colours and perspective.

Sorry if it confused you!

I'm glad you like the shot - as far as I know, the tunnels on glaciers are formed by water flowing through cracks and wearing away enough. From what I remember, I got pretty soaked by dripping water trying to get the shot just right.

Thanks a bunch for the comment - always appreciated!

hm. its just that million of people is watching thins image with different monitors, im my pc for instance i would like to see it with a little less contrast, as a guy pointed out, on the snow area, look a little burned, its a very nice photo, geometry and flow of liquid water

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

d---b In reply to lucasaguirre [2007-01-18 23:48:44 +0000 UTC]

That's a very fair point actually - I didn't think about the other monitors people might be viewing this on. The area at the back is actually an ice wall with the sun on it, so that's why it's so bright. But I'll have a re-evaluation of the picture and see if changing the contrast improves things. Thanks again!

well... you had me stumped for a good three minutes.

seriously
i thought at first this was some dodgy reflective manipulation of charlottes outline or something..

and then I had the seemingly ever popular reaction 'oh its a ROSE'... and then I read the description and apparently its water frozen in some weird shape and then I thought you must have manipulated one bit to have the white holey thing in the middle... and then i realised it was a photograph and was like 'you're shitting me!'

you're awesome man.

though next time dont be so confusing. it hurt me man.

hum.

maaaan.

hehehehe.
i would lower the contrast on this one. at least the alt colour is blue, thats pretty enough, but, too white! its a shocker. gasp, ice? never!!!

always.

man.

peace.

d---b In reply to lizelei [2006-12-16 19:50:49 +0000 UTC]

A dodgy reflective manipulation? I don't do manipulations, you know that!

I'm honestly surprised at the number of people who weren't quite clear on what this was - I mean, I have called it Tunnel Vision and said where it was taken in the description! I'm kinda glad though - it's nice to play with photography a bit too.

The white hole in the centre is the other end of the tunnel, and it actually opened straight out on a big wall of ice that was directly catching the sun, which is why it's such an intense white. I quite like the fact that it's almost too bright though - it gives the tunnel a sense of placelessness, I think.

By the way - the tunnel was big enough to crawl through, if you want a sense of scale So it's no small fry in the ice tunnel world.

Glad you like it!

Ran Paint Shop's clarify function on it, but that's pretty much the only change I've made to it post-shot.

when i first saw it was thinking what it was, then i realized ice, i like it, there just a rose like look, but also it seems... i dunno, it just wouldn't catch my eye in the passer by view, i dont know if its just my eyes, it doesnt seem like the quality of the rest of your art, hope i didnt hurt your feelings u said u wanted critic.... =-\

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

d---b In reply to TheFinalExile [2006-12-06 23:49:36 +0000 UTC]

I did - albeit something more constructive than "it doesn't seem like the quality of the rest"

I wanted to people to wonder what it was - that was sort of the point! I know you like your landscapes, and I realise this isn't one of them, but I was trying to go for a piece that was a little more abstract and not quite the same as all my other work; if you constantly work by the same formula things'll get boring!

Cheers for the comment though - always appreciated.
