Hey, thanks a bunch!
At least you were able to do it at all - the second time I was in Taupo (last July) was in the middle of winter and they'd closed the crossing completely. I was so annoyed - I'd desperately wanted to see it covered in snow!

Yeah, I was really happy I could do it. When a friend and I went there in November it was closed (well, not closed, but they told us not to o it) because of a heavy storm, so my friend couldn't do it either.
Did you do any of the sidetracks up to the summit of Mt Tongariro or Ngauruhoe?

Looks like the moon, only wetter (not that I've ever been)
btw, what's that big black mole-like thing over on the right? I heard they have some unique species down in the antipodes...

Very nice! But what is that structure on the right? That black, "thing".

On the right? In the foreground? It's a rock. You aren't the first person to ask, but I promise you it's a rock. I was on the slope of a volcano, so there was some wierd stuff lying around.

Hmm...maybe you should crop it out? It is a wee bit distracting...

Can't, really. I'd lose the image quality - you've got to remember, it was only a 2mp. And I think it sort of needs a foreground - shots that are just background, or middleground+background just get on my nerves because they seem so empty.

Really? Oh, it's the most incredible place on the planet. If she's going to the north island - and this is very very important - make sure she goes on the Tongariro Crossing hike near Taupo, it's where a few of my shots were taken. That day, without a doubt, was the best and most fulfilling day of my life.

There's a Crater Lake in Oregon (USA) too, it's also very pretty, it's a lake formed in the crater left by a volcano that blew it's top, the volcanic dome is actually rebuilding it's self and forms a little point in the middle of the lake, the water is a perfect blue as well, if you ever have a chance to see it it is a must-see, also Spirit lake (Right next to Mt. St. Helens) is breathtaking.

Great photo, I snowboard at Mt. Ruapehu most years and I never get tired of the volcanic terrain in that area. I especially like the way the mountains go deep into the backgrounds and when they stop the coulds keep going in the same pattern.

Boarding in NZ is great, Australian mountains are usually too flat for it

Ohh, nice, I also like the rock pointing to the lake as if it wants to redirect a wandering eye! But is it slanting a bit to the right or is it just me?

Peter Jackson and the crew of The Lord of the Rings constantly spoke of an otherworldly quality to New Zealand. How it seems to have been spared from the ravages of humanity.
In your NZ photos, you capture this quality as well as I've seen from anyone else.
Beautiful work.
