Description Santa Teresa is a fictional town. The name is stolen from various other fictional sources. It was invented by Ross MacDonald (The Moving Target, 1949; The Galton Case, 1959; Instant Enemy, 1968; and The Underground Man, 1971). He used it to represent a fictionalized Santa Barbara, which is sorta the Santa Teresa of Crossroads; Santa Barbara has a population of 88,000 which is a little bigger than I intended Santa Teresa to be. It's also WAY too far south for the Santa Teresa of Crossroads, which is situated somewhere around Sacramento-San Francisco, not L.A.

The name was later used by Sue Grafton as the setting for her Kinsey Millhone novels (of the "alphabet mysteries" series). In her version, Santa Teresa has a population of 85,000 and a small airport. Throughout her novels, it's clear she also intends it to be a fictionalized Santa Barbara.

There is no real-life corresponding town for my intentions. The small towns along Highway 1 (such as Marshall, California) are all too small, but are in roughly the right location. Our Santa Teresa is an hour or two north of S.F., and is a seaside town of around 40,000 or so.

So I guess my homage to the name is fine and good, even if I had to move the town north 300+ miles and change it's population drastically!
