Description Birkenau - Death camp - Poland

Photo: 03/2008

This photo is a Panoramic, 5 pictures are united to create this, then edited on Photoshop for the mirror effect.

Everyone should go even once in his life to visit those camps, to understand a lot more the horrible things which happened there in those terrible times. People don't have to be Jewish to visit those camps and to give a homage to the victims. You just have to have a heart and to be human. The visit is also important to understand the limits of the human beings' cruaulty...seeing what I've seen in Auschwitz and Birkenau I can say that those limits doesn't exist.

In those dead camps I've seen and I've heard a lot of German tourists visiting this in a very neutral and cool way. I'm probably naive but I'll never understand what German people are doing in this kind of places.

I'm an Artist and I'm a Witness. I will never shut up or close my eyes.

Very good shot, it shows the mood of this place.

I have been there 2 weeks ago. I am German and i understand that its not easy seeing Germans there.
We've been there with a yewish youth group and it was really a strong time - feeling shame and forgiveness at the same time.
I personally think, that Germans shpoult visit places like this. Germans learn a lot about the Holocaust in school and hear about it everywere but the personal connection is missing. when you go there with a Yew hand in hand, you have a completly different perspective.

I love all of your Pictures from Poland, thei're very nice!

Thank you very much for your comment JohKern ! I feel a bit warmer after reading it. I was there two years ago with Polish people (my wife and members of her family) and it's true that I saw a few young German guys having a strange behaviour, like if they were in the middle of a war game, talking in German very loud and laughing together. That's why I wrote this comment under my picture.
Every European and people in the world should visit those camps, for this kind of genocide not to happen anymore. I know that every young Polish citizen going to school must go for at least one visit of the camps and that's an excellent thing.
I've got nothing against German people, just against hate, violence and stupidity at this incredibly high level !

All the very best for you my friend.
Olivier

I was in Birkenau and Auschwitz some times ago, and I am convicted it's not forgettable place.
Still exist people who survive this horror. Ryszard Horowitz for example.

You're completely right and I'll remember this place for all my life. Thanks a lot to make me discover Horowitz's work and history !
I personally visited the camps with another survivor.

I think it's great they don't tear these camps down maybe they'll be reminders of what can happen if we're not careful.

Yes, it's great and very important that they kept the camps as they were when the camps were liberated. It helps everyone to try to understand what happened even if it's really hard for a person living in the 21th century.

There's no problem, it was maybe not clear enough in my description. It's clearer now I think.

Thanks for the comment !

Is it just me or is this picture symmetrical? The two sides look like mirror images of each other - are they?
