Description This is a true story...

I went to Pinagbuhatan to help build houses last August 30, 2008. So I was in a jeepney [link] on my way to the site and a friend of mine noticed that the driver of the jeepney was not just driving but drawing on a piece of paper while he was controlling the steering wheel. And what he was drawing was not just kinder garden scribbles or chicken scratches, but highly detailed Manga. The first thing I noticed was not his drawings, but his right little finger which closely resembled what Yakuza people had. It it was obvious that someone had cut it... It was definitely not an abnormality.

So my friends and I, intrigued, decided to interview him a little, and in about five minutes, he tells us his life story.

He is Jun Villianueva and he is a jeepney driver. He started drawing at the age of 5. He drew all over his things making his dad furious. One day his dad got mad because he would just draw and not study... his dad got a knife... and that explains his "short" little finger. Well that did not stop him from drawing. He kept on drawing and started to sell his artworks, allowing him to buy two jeepneys. Now, he sells his artworks to foreigners who rides his jeepney. He asks them what kind of artwork they want and he draws it while he drives. He even showed us how he drew while driving. He even claims that the screenplay/idea of Gagamboy was made by him.

At a point he told us to continue studying even if we did not like to... and continue doing what we like at the same time.

He even added:

"Hindi naman sa di ako nag-aaral, nag-aaral ako pero hindi ko ito hilig. Tinuloy ko ang gusto kong gawin kahit may mga bagay na nagpapatigil saakin. Kaya ngayon masaya ako sa buhay ko, ginagawa ko ang gusto ko."

("It's not that I don't study, I study but that is not what I like. I continued doing what I liked even if there were factors that stopped me. That's why now I am very happy with my life, I'm doing what I like.")

People who we think their lives are just a repetition of every day's work... you think they are just mere drivers... but their life stories, even if short, are very interesting.

A glimpse of reality.

There is a lot to be learned in one Jeepney ride - Only in the Philippines.

That was amazing. ^^

All the jeepneys I've been on so far have run-of-the-mill-looking drivers to me. Maybe that's just because Quezon City is a run-of-the-mill place. XD

This story is a great reminder for so many things. First, don't judge a book by its cover. Alot of us think that just because a person is a driver or a custodian, hindi na sila dapat bigyan ng pansin. I do notice that they're the people who have the most interesting stories to tell.

Second? Well, if you really want something, nothing should stop you from getting it. I admire this man for not giving up even there were obstacles. Makes me ashamed because I keep finding excuses not to draw.

Thanks for sharing. This is a definite It's beautiful on all aspects.

Wow, amazing! I think I like this even more than your really cool fashion-y photos.

My mum never lets me ride in Jeepneys when we go to the Philippines, though; it's WAY too obvious that I'm hapa and she gets a little tense about that. Plus she hasn't taught me more than really rudimentary Tagalog...

Those jeepneys are so bright and beautiful that I'm not surprised an artist like him owns one. I love the astrological sign ones - they're cute!
Reading this got me to realize that I really miss the Philippines right now, even though I haven't been there too many times. There's just something there that I haven't found in the States. Maybe it's from a lack of looking hard enough.
Thanks for reminding me that I joined dA for more than aesthetically pleasing works.

Salamat po, kuya.

great to hear that

thank you also for thinking that way

maybe one day you can visit the philippines. youll never know what you might be missing is just here.
