Description Human. Homo sapiens sapiens.

At what point does one cease to be human? Instinct buried deep, hidden in archived DNA, continues to drive us forward.

Sadly, I'm not all that familiar with what is going on with the Transhuman culture as a whole. I know it exists, and there are quite a few blogs, games, stories, etc. out there... but most of what I explore is good old science fiction, combined with my own life experience.

I think that's sort of the best part about trans-humanism, in a way. Everyone's got their own perspective on how the future of society and technology might take us. Quite a bit of the Bright Future's current look and feel is heavily influenced by other artists here on deviantart, and in particular Khal941 , whose setting I actually split the timeline of into a divergent reality. I liked the concept of an ultra-advanced technological Scifi can come from a retro-80s Scifi setting.

I'll have to look a bit more into Eclipse Phase, it does look like it has some interesting art, at the very least.

I'm not plugged into Transhuman culture either... I just was looking for sci-fi material for inspiration, mostly and got that RPG book! Eclipse Phase has a similar level of transhumanism, though, its put together differently, and now I see, your people are just a wee bit more advanced, what with Eclipse Phase being a few years into the future and (mostly) limited to the solar system! (I just reached for the first familiar thing in my head)

Rulebooks are a thing I collect, even if I no longer have a group of people to play face to face.

I've enjoyed playing and reading the Dungeon and Dragons, Pathfinder, and the various Cthulhu mythos games, they are really great sources of inspiration indeed.

Heh, that is one thing I do want to make a little more obvious in my art, and not have to rely on people hunting down a non-existant wiki. I gotta convey just how advanced some elements are in the Bright Future setting. Each image I make, I get closer to that, I feel... but no artist is an island. Input and feedback from people are what keeps me going, and keeps the quality from sliding backwards.

To that end, I thank you for the scattered shotgun style barrage of conversation you and I have had today.

hehe, you're welcome.

I collect rulebooks as well, to tell the truth, or have started to, A friend gave me some Shadowrun stuff..... and then I got FreeMarket (which yes, is really obscure but a shiny happy-go-lucky transhumanism), Eclipse Phase and Firefly RPG. I have a second-hand Werewolf the Apocalypse, which is a really well constructed setting (either they researched occult magic, or are just good at imagining logically).

So does psi com also have these technologies, biotech, and nano tech?Β
By the way does psi comp have any civilian based government at all?
What is the population under the control of the post human civilization psi comp is from?
What is the population of the laughing swarm?

Sorry to bombard you with all these questions Im just really interested in this setting.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Daemoria In reply to Mechazoidfallen [2016-06-17 19:10:03 +0000 UTC]

The PsiComp is the group that established this dark program. All the research, tech, and other advancements directly feed back to them, and thus to humanity as a whole.

Civilian government, yes. Later on, after the nasty business of reuniting the scattered groups of human survivors is over with... These regional governments have oversight from PsiComp Authority, to ensure nothing goes wrong. The civilians in the higher political positions are typically hired into the PsiComp.

All the humans that 'currently' exist come from a small local star cluster of independent planets on the edge of the Milky Way galaxy, many thousands of light years distant from Earth/Sol. There is probably 6-10 planets that unified and escaped the Milky Way, a few billion humans, all together.

I don't have a name for the spoken language, but the written language is 'Sigil'. The spoken language at the time of the Laughing Swarm's story is not really a singular spoken language. Due to some tampering with events/entities beyond comprehension, it's changed into something quite different. It's more of a memetic/viral expression. Heard by any sentient mind, it's perfectly understandable to that individual. There are still some minor differences between a member of the Laughing Swarm speaking, and that of a native english speaker. The main difference is their shortened word pairs, and lack of contractions.

The strange effects of hearing this 'language' is described the the story attached here.

HugoBorchardt [2016-05-01 16:40:39 +0000 UTC]

I could wax long on the subject, but i suppose it boils down to a few points. Mainly, perception being the basis of consciousness. Experiencing the same things create common ideas and emotions that people can use to associate themselves together. There is both a structural component to this, and a theoretical one. Can she see in an expanded spectrum? How much sharper are her senses of smell and hearing? The theoretical or conceptual level is a bit messier. Β Certainly modern humans are not a great deal different anatomically from the earliest homo sapiens sapiens, but there is a huge divide in the ways we experience the world and internalize those experiences. The creation of writing is perhaps the first great shift. With memory offloaded to books, and thinking increasingly offloaded onto computers, the way we think about our own nature changes, which in turn changes our nature. Technologies like cybernetics and genetic manipulation, mostly unrealized today, offer the ability to bridge these realms. Β

I suppose to put it more succinctly, we are always changing and adapting. What makes us human is not any type of specific sensory capability or posture, but the ability to internalize complex concepts and change ourselves based on them, rather than blindly adapting to every short term event that occurs. El-Pha is perfectly human in my mind, in more ways than one! The difference is quantitative not qualitative.Β

Brilliant work as always.

Wait, what? Why would PsiComp even mess with an ambassador? Is it something like halo, where candidates are selected based on their genetic makeup and so forth?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Daemoria In reply to C05M0NAUT [2016-05-01 06:16:45 +0000 UTC]

It might be something like that, but I dunno if there is a genetic index in their society. (Hm, maybe there might be one for security purposes? Like DNA fingerprints?)

The way I picture the events leading up to the kidnap authorization, is some sort of power play, to show who is truly in charge. The PsiComp pulls the strings of society, to ensure everything runs smoothly, in a subtle fashion. When some people start to threaten that smooth operation, actions must be taken.

I really like how PsiComp has that BG style. It's so cool I can compare the two, because your psiComp is like a modern take on the Bene Gesserit. I mean, you're the vanguard of today's concept in sci-fi, such as eugenism, symbiotic armors, posthumans, AI that are whole spaceships and giant artefacts... Things that Herbert couldn't really put into his work, or at least not the way you do it. So yeah, I'm really enjoying your stuff.

Well that's a dick move, to say the least. But why be subtle about it--why not just do it outright? Accuse her family of some violation and confiscate their daughter as compensation, or something. But hey, this character is quickly becoming one of my favorites in your gallery. Is her ..condition.. unique? Are there other dark projects? (And I'm not too knowledgeable of the lore you've crafted for this universe. Is there any place where I can read up on it or anything?)

So very, very pretty... I love it! Of course, I have my own ideas for post-human augmentations... but I won't inflict them on you here... that's what my gallery is for. I'm not sure about the logistics of a nano scale fusion reactor, but it looks amazing. As I'd expect... a 'latent paranoid-schizophrenic psychotic' is exactly the kind of person who'd survive the PsiComp purge of the Exna Fleets. I really like the circulatory system, but you seem to have some corruption that's confusing the exact nature of the new organ you've shown...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Daemoria In reply to DBrentOGara [2016-05-25 13:50:33 +0000 UTC]

To tell the truth, the nano reactor is one of the more fantastical elements of my tech here. I've had the idea that Bonesuits were augmented by the reactors since pretty much day one. Their standard nutrient rich diet is good for the day to day operation, when low on nutrients they can either shift into a hibernation mode, or resort to using the reactors. The reactors are long term power supplies, with the fuel already included on the creation of each suit. Once the fuel is exhausted, the suit is most likely broken down, and regrown with new reactors, and any upgrades the biomancers have made in the interim 'months'.

That damn corruption gets everywhere. It's almost like the universe itself needs a patch and hotfix or two.

I always look forward to your post-human tech. You had some really good iterations of the crew, I'm halfway tempted to draw a few outfits for them actually.
The holographic AI here was actually my favorite iteration of her.

DBrentOGara In reply to Daemoria [2016-05-25 14:22:22 +0000 UTC]

While a straight 'plasma fusion' nano-reactor would most likely not in reality have the mass/energy density to survive the heat of it's own reaction, a catalyzed fusion reactor of some kind could. We don't have such a catalyst now, but saying "Because we don't understand this science right now, no future human ever will" has never been a winning proposition in the entire history of science. There are all sorts of awesome reactions that can be catalyzed by nano-assembled crystalline heavy metal matrices. Why not Zoidberg Fusion?

Yeah, the corruption can be annoying... but I'm sure Axbet has some ideas for universal patches!

I'm thinking I may just need to draw out some of my most recent ideas about post-human bodies (in the description, under "World Building")... some of it was stolen from you, in fact!

If you like that AI, then you'll love the interloper/protagonist that I've come up with for the newest iteration of the story. I took a cue from Terminator (the first two, the good ones) and decided that the tech the girl's bodies are built on (super-hard, super-strong, but ultimately static and breakable) would naturally be superseded by a highly adaptive, more fluid approach to creating advanced human-shaped bodies (but that's a plot point and spoiler of it's own!).
