Description ... when everybody is less smart than oneself . I love Stamets' grumpy face when he tries to teach the unteachables.

After binge watching "13 Reasons Why" and "Stranger Things" it is back to re-watches of "Star Trek Discovery", and back to painting my most fav character: Anthony Rapp as the prickly Lieutenant Paul Stamets.

I so love the faces he pulls. I was looking for a reference for Cornwell and was sorting throught the screencaps from "Lethe" ... and alone in this minute or two that he was in there, I already found so many different facial expressions, that I had to postpone my Cornwell plans ...

Wonderful details. ^^Β
This might sound odd but I like the way you draw ears. They feel very three dimensional like a sort of painty sculpture. Lovely!

Β  It does not sound odd. You may laugh, but in the past somebody said the same to me. I never realized that I did something special with the ears (other than I really like painting them, there is so much intricacy there and ears can be so different in their forms if one looks closely).

Mr. Grumpy has very sculptural features anyway (hope the word "sculptural" exists), that's wonderful to paint.

My mom and I just started watching Star Trek Discovery last night!Β  We both loved it, though we laughed at a serious moment because of an accidental reference to a Stephen King novel.Β  Unfortunately, we've only seen the first two episodes so I haven't met this character yet.

Aw, I'm so glad to hear that you like the series. There is so much vitriol going on, so many gatekeepers telling the likes of me that we are the reason why Star Trek is ruined, just because we like DSC. Most of the time I'm shaking my head and don't want to be a Trekkie at the moment ...

Stamets comes up in ep 3. I'm curious how you perceive him. There are many fans who hated him at first, cause he is very prickly and mean to Burnham. But he turns into a real cutie as the show goes on.
(I fell in love 3 seconds into his first appearance ... no help there )

Some people are angry because Discovery goes against Gene Roddenberry's vision but I have to say this and I'm really sorry that I'm saying this.Β  Gene Roddenberry made a great world but sometimes his vision could be kind of limiting.Β  SFDebris talked about a book he read by one of the TNG writers, and I don't know how true this is, so you'll have to fact check it.Β  He claimed that the writers had to work inside the Roddenberry box which made things difficult for them.

I know what you mean.Β  I feel the same way about Roman Godfrey from Hemlock Grove.Β  I haven't really formed an opinion on him yet, but Stamets appearance (hell pretty much the entire show) gives me some feelings of deja vu.Β  I will admit that I'm happy that there are no straw vulcans and, so far, no species stereo-typing.Β  There's another issue I have but it's more of an issue I had with Trek in general and it's very liberal.Β  However, they are hinting that what they're doing is not okay.

I'm not sure about that part with Roddenberry's vision. I heard a lot of stuff from the gatekeeping fraction, but nearly none of it convinced me. Who knows what Roddenberry would have said if he lived today? Nobody.

DSC is what our time now needs. I can see this clearly on the tweets I'm reading over on twitter. I came into contact and had discussions with people about their sexual identity, about past misuses about PTSD. All because they finally found themselves represented in Star Trek. Sometimes I really had to swallow hard, cause my life always has been a stroll in paradise garden; sometimes I had to cry a little; but the power of those talks was overwhelming. And this is was Star Trek has to be about.

He talks alot about what the Star Trek writers dubbed the Roddenberry box in his reviews.Β  If you get angry about what he says, please don't shoot the messenger.

I haven't gotten far enough in the series to know about sexual identity, but I am aware of the PTSD.Β  I'm happy that the show's having such an effect on people.Β  Truth is, I have a love/hate relationship with the show.Β  It's a cool show with great characters and an amazing plot, but the streaming service of CBS All Access kind of sucks on my PS4.Β  Also, this is going to sound really stupid, but I have similar ideas for my fanfic that they're using in the show.Β  My mom says to take it as a sign that my ideas are good and not exactly like what the show's doing.

LOL! I've been warned about this sfdebris type before. I had enough of so called true Star Trek fans and gatekeepers. I don't use any more of my littleΒ free time to listen to people who want to tell me why I'm loving a show I love. I had some of them in my tweets. I found wonderful groups and people who love Discovery. That's where I spend my time nowadays.

Thank you very much for the link anyway. Β

Hahaha I'm used to that with my Mycroft... He says that he lives in a world of goldfishes XD
Binge watching sounds good XD

LOL! That's a good line! And now I know what one painting meant, that I happened to come across: it was a MyCroft surrounded by goldfishes.

Binge watching is kind of fun. Since we got Netflix cause of Discovery we thought we could as well use it. During the run of the first half of the season I couldn't watch anything else, cause I had enough to do with rewatching each episode at least 3 times during the week, and thinking about it the other days. But now the series is on hiatus till January and so my hubby and I started to have look around what else is on there.

AloiInTheSky In reply to Dahkur [2017-12-16 17:22:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's the explanation of such pictures XD I might draw one like this one day ^^

You really are into it so deeply.... I totally was like that with TOS at the time. I watched each episode twice in a row, and after watching all 90 episodes, I just started all over again XD I did that at least three times...
Is Netflix costly?

Dahkur In reply to AloiInTheSky [2017-12-18 16:08:17 +0000 UTC]

We pay around 10 Euro/month for Netflix, which is okay. My hubby uses it often. I guess, when Christmas stuff is done, we'll start with the next series till Discovery is on again. (guess we try "The Expanse")

AloiInTheSky In reply to Dahkur [2017-12-19 08:15:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, it's quite OK !! My own card for illimited access to the movies is some 22€/month, and it works pretty well since I go to the movies at least once per week. I like that since I've paid all in advance for this year, I don't have to think about the money it would cost each time I take a ticket. It feels like it's for free XD
