Description My personal favorite photo that I took of Bugara on my latest visit to Fort Wayne Children's Zoo. For me, this one is a little more artsy and the way I composed it makes it look like he's in the wild instead of in a zoo. Taken at Fort Wayne Children's Zoo in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 2nd, 2013.

The tiger’s tale
Sumatran tigers live in the rain forests and grasslands of Sumatra and Indonesia. At the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, you can see Sumatran tigers in Tiger Forest.

A striped hunter
Tigers hunt and eat boar, deer, wild pigs, water buffalo, wild cows, snakes, fish, frogs, and birds. At the zoo, they eat a feline diet and occasionally large bones to gnaw on.

So what’s the deal with the stripes anyway?
Tigers’ black stripes provide camouflage that is most effective at dawn and dusk. Compared to the other four tiger subspecies, Sumatran tigers are the smallest and have closer, narrower stripes on brighter colored fur than the others.

The tools of a predator
Tigers have sharp teeth and tongues covered with tiny backward-pointing bristles used for grooming and eating. Tigers see much like humans during the day but far more accurately than us at night. Sumatran tigers can also hear extremely well.

If at first you don’t succeed…
Hunting requires a lot of energy. Tigers travel up to 15 miles to find food, and they successfully catch prey in only one out of ten tries. Sumatran tigers are most active at night and hunt mainly at dusk and dawn. They are solitary animals, but sometimes socialize when hunting.

Bringing up cubs
Tiger mothers raise two to four cubs. Cubs are born blind and helpless weighing two to three pounds. Cubs soon tag along on the hunt, learning their mother’s techniques. The cubs hunt alone at one year of age. Cubs remain with their mother for two to three years, leaving after a new litter is born. Male cubs grow faster than their female siblings.

Disappearing act
Tigers are in big trouble. As their habitat is cleared for farming and palm oil plantations, the tiger population is dropping. As a predator at the top of the food chain, they are extremely vulnerable. Improved monitoring and pressure on the Indonesian government may help. You can choose to buy products that use only sustainable palm oil, which preserves native forests for tigers and other rare animals.

Sumatran?

A strong shot, but I'd like to see a little color-correct to really make it pop.

He's a Sumatran Tiger, along with his sister Indah. Too much editing would make this look artificial, and personally I like the photo the way it is, but if I had the skill and software to do a small color-correct, I would do it in a copy of this image and not in the original if I was going to make a print of this. The overall look of a jungle in a zoo setting is what I'm most proud of in this piece, and no sign that he is in an enclosure surrounded by fencing. Where in the image would you do a color-correct anyway?

I agree, don't want to fuss with it too much, but a little judicious editing could really bring it to life, I think.

Once I get more knowledgeable on photo-editing and get the software needed to do complex things like that, then I may consider using that for future photos.

I find the best way to learn is to play with the programs...

Well, it;s not my favorite sumatran tiger photo... It's my favorite TIGER photo period. This is a serious contender for your best photo of all time. And yes, the composition is absolutely awesome. If I was just browsing photos of tigers, I would assume this was a very brave photographer out in the wilds.

It would certainly seem this is my most popular deviation so far going by the fact it is now my most faved deviation at 35 and continuing to go up. I am striving for a shot to top this one from the Siberian Tiger subspecies or any of the others I can see. It is something I could potentially sell for prints if somebody requested it, and if I could've submitted it to an actual photo contest from Fort Wayne Children's Zoo or in the main newspaper of the city of Fort Wayne, then this one could very likely score highly or even make first place. The habitat Bugara and his sister Indah have at that zoo is tied with the setups at Akron Zoo and Louisville Zoo for how immersive they are, making you feel you are in the jungles of Sumatra where these cats live naturally.
