I started crying as soon as I realized what he was gonna try to do. I was like, "No Kartik don't! Gemma already can't die because she's the narrator! If you die, she has to live her whole life without you and with all the guilt of your demise! And what about me?!?!"

Haha. I have two copies of the books too. I'm also obsessed with the Twilight series, but I was obsessed with AGATB first. I didn't know who was going to die (since I read the book the day it came out so spoilers weren't out yet), but I was fairly certain it wouldn't have a perfectly happy ending since Libba Bray isn't afraid to kill off characters. In every book. I guess it is a happier ending than if they both had lived, because there'd be no way they could be together anyway. During that time period, there'd be nowhere in the world they could go and be together, and they couldn't stay in the realms. Just look what happened to Pippa. But I still hope that Libba Bray writes an unofficial alternate ending in which everyone lives happily ever after so we can pretend that's what really happened.

But that doesn't really make any sense. The lady that was in the tree (Wilhelmina right?) was just trapped there forever. Still conscious and everything, so wouldn't it stand to reason that the same would happen to Kartik? That he's stuck in the tree until the tree becomes someone else? I guess it could work out if you reasoned that across the river is everyone's personal paradise and for Gemma that includes Kartik, but that'd still be a reproduction Kartik because the real one would be stuck in the tree.
I have to have more than one that way if someone borrows it and I have an existential melt-down before they give it back, I can heal myself through the power of Edward. (Lol, I sound like such a freak.) What actually happened was I bought one for myself and jokingly told someone to borrow one of my other books so they could use the money they saved to buy me a book, and they did. Then someone else bought me another copy. So, if I ever grow up and have more than one house or something, I'll always have a copy on-hand.

hmmm...i'm pretty convinced that kartik died. so then his soul was released. because eugina (she was the one in the tree) was one of the order, so she actually had real realms power. kartik didn't. idk...i just think that he died, and that it IS the real kartik across the river. pop my bubble if you will, but i still believe it. i'm very good at believing even the impossible
lol and yeah, i'm totally with you on twilight. i'm getting a second hard-cover copy of all of them. and no, you're not a freak. i'm the freak. i have no life outside of twilight, and i was apparently more like bella than anyone else any of my friends have met...years before i even knew who she was. that's scary, but also, unbelievably cool. bella is love; bella is me

Almost that same thing happened to me before, except that it was with a NERF dart gun, and the person I hit wasn't even on the same side of the room as the person I was aiming for. But I darted him right between the eyes. (And I pretended that that's where I was aiming afterwards.)
I think that your friends just have a conspiracy going in which they purposely get hit with almonds when they know that you're not aiming at them.
