There is no such thing as a saber-toothed tiger.  The correct term is saber-toothed cat, and there are many species.  The largest and most famous is Smilodon, and it took over both Americas.

The Americas have recently joined, forming a land bridge, allowing animals to go from one place to another.  Smilodon is among those that migrated south, while some moved north.  In South America, the saber-tooth preyed on many bizarre animals there.  Easy game was the hippo-like Toxodon and the bizarre Macrauchenia.  The armored Doedicurus and the giant ground sloth Megatherium are usually safe from this giant cat.

Meanwhile, in North America, the Smilodon there hunted the calves of the giant Columbian Mammoth, as well as huge abundances of modern grazers like bison while also competing with other predators like the Dire Wolf and the terror bird Titanis.  However, in California, one place is a trap for the predators and prey.  A lining of tar pits held thousands of bones of animals that got stuck and died trying to pull free.  Herbivores would get stuck and die, and predators would be lured by the sight of an easy meal, only to end up trapped themselves.  Today, these graveyards are called the La Brea Tar Pits, and it is a gold mine for Pleistocene fossils...
