Description Decided to finally download and install Windows 10 Technical Preview on a virtual machine the other day and I'm testing it out and messing around with it, seeing what it can and can't do.

Right now I'm messing with the new method of customizing the start menu and I must say, I am very impressed with the customization possibilities in the new one! You can shape it to just about anything! (I'm in fullscreen mode right now, but I prefer the little menu in the corner... it's just easier to customize it in fullscreen lol)

I LOVE the new window animations, including the maximize animation which never previously existed. I also LOVE the new effects on the taskbar, the hovering effect, the lines, everything. It looks and feels great! ....Just quite buggy.

I'm currently downloading the new 10041 build just released today. Quite excited to try out all the changes in it! What do you think of Windows 10 so far?

Windows 10 is great so far. Only the icons should be made by you.

Let the professionals make the icons. I'm just an amateur that wants to be professional. It would be really cool to design for Microsoft, or Apple, or Google one day though!

Maybe the professionals are more experienced than you. Only they lack of taste. It is easier to get more experience than getting a better taste. So the time works for you.

dAKirby309, why you don't try to get a job at Microsoft? Β ...you're so good at what you do here in DA, and Microsoft even had a open job for interface designer or something like that some months ago... ..I don't know, just though you should at least try something on those linesΒ

This comment means a lot to me, glad you think I do a good job on my work. I do try to do my best, but I don't think I'm all that great.

I'm not a professional graphic designer so I don't know if MS would even consider me, and I believe interface designer requires knowledge of coding; HTML, CSS, etc. I don't know anything about that, but I will probably be taking a class on programming soon to get some knowledge about it... even though I have little interest in that stuff.

Thanks for the meaningful words It would be awesome to work for a great company like Microsoft, and it'd be cool to be able to one day!

You're welcome Β ..believe in yourself and work around your strengths. I really think that if you go for it you could do well. See what's needed to qualify for the jobs you want to go for, and be bold. Hope you'll get where you're willing to get professionally

I think it's pretty good, but can't you cange taskbar to small icons?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dAKirby309 In reply to charliehd4 [2015-03-19 15:10:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you're still able to change taskbar size to small. They did reduce the size of the normal sized taskbar icons though, from 48x48px (size of icons on Windows 7/8) down to 32x32 in Windows 10.

charliehd4 In reply to dAKirby309 [2015-03-19 17:00:22 +0000 UTC]

Alright, and this taskbar size you're using it's this a "special" size?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dAKirby309 In reply to charliehd4 [2015-03-19 17:15:32 +0000 UTC]

If by special size you mean 32x32, then yes.

Alright, but this taskbar seems bigger than my small taskbar in W8.1, W8.1 uses 24x24pixels in small taskbar?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dAKirby309 In reply to charliehd4 [2015-03-20 15:02:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah. I'm using large taskbar icons, the taskbar in the screenshot is the same exact height as the taskbar is in Windows 8, just smaller icons. The 'small icons' mode of the taskbar is 24 pixels and the icons are 16x16 as they always have been.

can you use oblytile with this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dAKirby309 In reply to Orphydian [2015-03-19 15:38:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah OblyTile seems to work, except it doesn't seem to give correct sizing. For example, I tested it using a metro tile I made, I made it to be a large tile and pinned it to the start menu. 1) I wasn't able to make it into a large tile, it restricted me to small and medium, and when it was sized to small or medium, the icon was only taking up 50% of the actual tile dimensions. The rest was blank space. 2) When I told it to PIN as a certain sized tile, it didn't pin. It only showed up when I went to "All Apps" and scrolled down to find it, then pin it.

So it does work, but not very well.

so you can use Oblytile with small and medium tiles? Β There are still available those abstract backgrounds for starstscreen ? I see you have a solid colour simple background

Have you been able to test out the Cortana integration?

Oh, I have not... yet. I haven't gotten around to it but from what I hear, Cortana works very well.

I've only been able to use the text interactions. Those work pretty well. My microphone driver won't install in the VM though so, I can't try that out just yet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dAKirby309 In reply to spydawebm [2015-03-20 15:00:41 +0000 UTC]

I got my microphone working for Cortana on my VM but Cortana seems to have trouble understanding everything I say. A couple times I tried, she thought I was saying something completely different. And when I told her to "open Registry Editor" she thought I said like "potato registry editor" and searched that in Chrome. XD

So MS still has a few kinks to work out.

spydawebm In reply to dAKirby309 [2015-03-22 14:35:49 +0000 UTC]

lol. Yes, this is a problem Cortana has unfortunately. I can go long stretches where it hears me perfectly, but then suddenly none of my phrases are understood. Β On the bright side, I've read that they're working on a vastly improved version of Cortana codenamed Einstein that should be out for Windows 10 at some point. Β For now, Google -- I think -- has the best voice recognition of the three search AIs (Siri, Cortana, etc).

Try out the new (buggy) login screen, and new clock widget

Aren't those features of build 10041? At least the new login screen right? The clock widget is that new design for the popout window that shows up when the taskbar clock is clicked, correct?

Ah, right! I'm not sure what the new login screen is though. It's enabled by default in 10041 according to WindowsBlogs, but I can't spot notable differences. Do you know what they are? (Aside from the small chess icon next to the clock to indicate the new login screen).

And I was considering trying out the new clock UI, looked rather interesting.

it IS pretty good, considering that MS just announced that not only will Windows 10 be a free upgrade, and that you have a year to snag it, but they have said that the copy that you are running does NOT even have to be legit. Β  That is right, you can upgrade a pirated copy to a legit copy. Β  I believe i saw it on Gizmodo this morning.

And plus, they recently said it will be available this SUMMER too!
