Description Okay, some of you may think this is pretty freaky, but I find the creature rather cute
This is my entry for =kodriak 's awesome Creature Contest.[link] Obviously I based my creature on a (dog)nose.
...
I just read she extended the deadline, but I wanted to say anyway that I made old one too I'm not good with deadlines, so I'm pretty proud xD

Anyway, I think all the information is in the deviation itself. If you have any suggestions/questions about the layout/given information/ etc. just ask, I'll gladly answer your questions about the Nohse.

Creature design (c) to me

Tools Photoshop 7.0 + Trust Tablet
Time Taken hmm, forgot. somewhere around 4-5 hours, most of the time spend on the nose in the middle.

huge edit: Yeah! This entry was first in the contest [link]

I was all like whoathatscoolgsejitjasasdasdasda when I saw this! It's so cool and the idea is a) cute and b) creepy. Scary thingie. What if I have a nohse in my nose! Oh. I just have to say that I definitely love the design of this little creature.

I think this has to be not only one of the cutest, but also the coolest things I have ever seen in my life. No kidding. Since I was little I have had an obsession with animal noses, I absolutely love them and find them fascinating. This little creature here is going to stick in my head forever and I will never be able to kiss my dogs' noses without imagining those squiggly tentacles rippling again +laughs+ Very clever and well put together. You did a really nice job of drawing it and I love how it fits into the animals' muzzle like that. Quite realistic.

One question because I am a dork and got confused...what do they eat? Do they eat the former nose of the creature and live off that nutrition for the rest of their lives? Or do they sort of absorb what is sniffed as a kind of nutrition in itself?

So I'm not the only who finds animal noses interesting! Same feeling here, I adored them too when I was young (and still!) They look so... not like a part of their bodies. They're not hairy, and seem like another organ themselves, very different from our own noses. The idea of the 'Nohses' exists in my head for a little while now;I always wanted to make a childrens book out of it. The 'Creature Contests' gave me an excellent reason to work out this concept. Another funny thing is that I always start to draw the nose, before the rest if I draw an animal.

And; Really clever question. I actually forgot to write that down in the description. The Nohses are still parasites: They feed of their hosts nutrition. They don't have a stomach or anything, they just integrate with the veins of their host, and are so provided with food.
I actually like your last suggestion even more than my own explanation! The host of course absorbs some edible things along the way. But that I should draw the inner parts of the Nohse too, because I've to show how the food gets absorbed etc. Maybe I'll do that one day. Thanks for the idea and the lovely comment

I so agree with you, they are like a separate organ. I actually often start on the nose when drawing too, how weird. If you ever make that childrens book I would wait in line to buy it.

Ooh, okay, very cool and that makes sense. You definitely should draw their insides, I would love to see. You are quite welcome.

Okay, I must say that this freaked me out a little bit, especially since I've got my dog, Kodiak lying on one side of me and kitty DQ on the other. *shifty eyes*
I've been so crazily busy lately that I completely forgot about you doing a nose-based critter! When I saw the thumbnail in my message center it was like "OH YEAH!"

Very nicely developed, that paragraph about them is really indepth. The part with the nerves and veins seems quite realistic. Explains why the nose is so sensitive!

Okay, I keep getting this mental image of those nose critter crawling across the floor on its many legs. *shudder*

Awesome concept dude! And thanks for entering.
Sorry for the lame comment. I've been up since 3 this morning (its now 8) and its been a really, really long day.

Haha, nice. You might want to change the name though, a 'noose' in English is a 'strop' in Dutch (thing at the end of a gallows)

O. No. I'll change it into: Nohse.
Sounds better than 'Nouse'.

Daktari92 In reply to smeding [2008-11-28 15:47:41 +0000 UTC]

Omg 0.0 yeah, you're right. I'll change that second 'o' into a 'u'. I already checked my dictionary, it's not an existing word.

The only thing that comes close to it is 'nous' which means 'gezond verstand'.but you probably knew that already

thanks for the tip!

Thanks it's nice to get a comment like that from a skilled artist like you. (yes, I checked your gallery xD you drew some wicked creatures yourself, and I like your still-life of a sink)
