Description Anybody remember the Green Slime movie? A space Station is infested with these trundling green freaks, with the power to zap people to death...they looked kind of goofy, and i thought it was because of their legs showing. So le's make them without legs, a rolling multi eyed mass of ooze...and throw in a Babe, For fun...!

It's so damned much fun! it has spaceships, green one-eyed monsters, killer asteroids, burning space stations, a cool movie poster with a silver space-suited gal who is not even in the movie, a BOND girl, it was written by Bill Finger, a hot little model/actress Linda Miller, and the coolest theme song ever!! It's the perfect cheezy SCI-FI movie! Slice me an extra large piece!
Now I want to watch it again!

Is it like one of those movies where everybody points out the flaws in the effects work, and says things like, " my five year old could do better, and he's pretty stupid!"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MJBivouac In reply to dalek-hal [2015-10-15 00:59:57 +0000 UTC]

I have noticed that people who are the most critical of motion picture effects work are usually those who really know the least about how it's all done. And today, we have all these "children" who grew up on fancy-shmancy CGI in games and movies, and even TV, who just are not able to look into the past and understand that things were different in those days. I mean some of them wont even watch a black and white movie.Β

THey're used to all these Hollywood Blockbusters, which costΒ  hundreds of MILLIONS of dollars. yet those films aren't any better in the long run. They look at a 50s monster movie and conclude that it was super cheap, the people working on it were incompetent, and the whole thing was stupid. They figure anyone nowadays could easily make that kind of movie. A Godzilla film could be banged out over the weekend. It's just a guy in a rubber suit, banging up a toy city. That's so easy!Β  Or Take Ray Harryhausen'sΒ  stuff, which wasΒ  just jerky, fake looking toys. They don't really know it's done. They can't appreciate the work that went into even the cheaper movies. Can they build a monster suit? Could they construct a miniature of Tokyo, New York, or Los Angeles, in exacting detail..? Could they construct a working set? Or even work out the lighting? And let's not even talk stop motion animation.
Β  I go to Youtube a bit, and i've the things these people come up with. Wretched"stories", toy monsters that they bought and move with their hands visibly in the shots, childishly drawn backgrounds if at all.Β Β  The stories are stupid. Deliberately so. It's easy to do STUPID.Β  But do people really want stupid?

Stupid is as stupid does...
Years ago, in college, I got to talking with some guy who was my age, who described a movieΒ he had seen where the special effects were done with those little puppets that they move a tiny bit and take a frame of film...like it was a BAD thing. I asked him if he would have prefer a guy in a rubber suit. He didn't really seem to have an answer for me...In those days those two options were about all Hollywood had. I really didn't know where this guy was coming from.Β

They just don't appreciate the work that's involved. Stop motion animation is hard work.Β Β  You can't just ..do it. Building monster suits is hard work, as well. Consider the Gill-Man.Β  Does that just get slapped together? I've had to work with both techniques and it ain't no picnic. CGI? the average youtube guy hasn't access to the programs the Hollywood guys pay millions for. Can they just do it on their home computers? Don't think so. Worst of all are their half-assed scripts! Assuming anyone took the time to make one. ED Wood is Orson Welles compared to these guys.

Well, it is amazing what a guy on a consumer grade desktop computer CAN do with available CG artΒ programs. I've seen some very well done work. But no matter how you cut it classic stop motion, shot on REAL film was TOUGH to say the least.

dalek-hal In reply to Lomeloke [2012-08-24 16:04:50 +0000 UTC]

Well it was made back in 1969, a Japanese-American co-production. Is it good? Wellll...it's certainly not boring! These green slime monsters get loose on a space station and they seek electricity. They can electrocute people with the claws on the ends of their tentacles. Men would shoot them with laser guns, and they'd go down, but their blood creates more monsters .Soon, there are all these cyclopean blob monsters running about craving electric power. You can stop them by turning off the power, but you're on a space station. You can hardly shut off the power to the life support systems. Can you?
I used to see this fairly often, but so much anymore . You could check youtube. I got a copy through Amazon.

Thank you! I loved Japanese monster movies. They had this corny sense of fun, and i'd read even if something seemed outrageous on screen, they'd say, "never mind. It wil make the children happy". Too bad they don't make monster movies any more.

I've seen too many hentais to know where this is going.
I also know that The Green Slime has the dubious distinction of being the first movie MST3K did (they did 30 minutes of the film as a test to show TV station officials what this was like.)

The artwork itself is very nice. It has a good retro feel to it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dalek-hal In reply to quamp [2011-10-22 16:37:03 +0000 UTC]

Hentais...well, when i was making this, i was thinking old pulp magazine covers, where the heroes would be battling alien monsters. The girl here is still struggling and she's still armed, and i think she could still blast the Slime. She can still win. It is only the Green Slime, after all...
Boy that was a dumb movie! MST3K found lots worse, though... Thank you for the nice comments!

Well, yeah, it's hokey, but 2 vyears before it would've been state of the art. I guess 2001, changed all that. Then again, that was a very costly film, made by a visionary director, and you'll note the spfx for future movies didn't become the norm for 10 years, because of cost...
I didn't mind the Green Slime. it entertained me for 90 minutes, and it wasn't forgettable!
