Well, this is special modification (based on AK and Saiga carbine), designed for cossack patrol. Since most of Tsardom's territory is steppe, they decided to optimize it a bit for long range shooting.

Inspired by Tommy-Gun, based on Romanian AK, modified from stock Soviet AK in local workshop. Finding original Romanian AK in postapocalyptic wasteland is a little bit too troublesome.

Pretty much yes. Soviet Union supplied AK all over the world, so why bother? There are still enouph Soviet AKM and AK-74 in different military reserves to arm nearly half of Russian population

Lessons of WW1 ware learned well

Russia pretty much is covered with forests (Helped pretty much during defensive wars, like, WW2 or Napoleonic war). Large part of Russia on the north-east is still just one giant forest with a ton of natural wonders, like, oldest mountain range on the goddamn planet, or GIANT swamp (Vasyugan Swamp, for example, is much larger then Switzerland, 53 000 km² vs 41 000 km²).
Also, unlike Fallout, in Age of Atom Armageddon was not so devastating for trees.
