Description Another piece from my gender illustration class. It's an affirmation of birth control as the glorious victory that it is. (!)

It's the goddess Nike (referenced from the statue Nike of Samothrace, and rendered art-nouveau style) holding aloft the small package of birth-control pills and braced by a wave of condoms. Yes, they are condoms. And yes, I am crazy, because I rendered them all.

Unfortunately the pill is dangerous and is currently killing the environment, women and unborn children.

Did you really just say it's killing unborn children...it's made to prevent having children, how can it kill something that has been prevented? Unless you mean it's killing fetuses because a woman is taking it while already pregnant....even then it won't always kill the fetus, it can cause problems to the child once it's born. But yeah...

The pill is not dangerous actually. The combined pill has a tiny link to breast cancer, but only to those who have a family history. The pill does not directly kill anyone. It does not harm the enviroment as it is merely hormone replacement/extra hormones. It does not kill unborn children, but prevents pregnancy, most women actually go on it for the first time to control and ease periods.

it is dangerous

Lokni In reply to turtlelackie [2011-04-08 12:47:42 +0000 UTC]

That is when the pill is taken DURING pregnancy or improperly. You are supposed to start the pill at the beginning of your cycle, then everyday after that. This prevents pregnancy. The pill is a very safe and trusted form of contraception which eases periods and prevents pregnancy. Any harse side affects are very rare. Forms similar to the pill i,e extra hormones are not new and have been around for many years. If you have concerns about the pill then I suggest the "mini pill" or progesterone only pill (POP) This does not contain oestrogen and is much safer and suitable to most women, it can even be taken during breastfeeding.
This is because large amounts of progesterone are produced during pregnancy, which maintains the endometrium, and as you know, pregnant women cannot get pregant again. This is completely natural and safe. It is also a very effective form of birth control.

It also happens during breakthrough ovulation, we need to ban the dangerous one

The combined pill is actually the most popular, but its effect depends on the women. As I said, any occurences such as this are very rare and the pill has to be taken properly first.

turtlelackie In reply to Lokni [2011-04-09 11:16:12 +0000 UTC]

Even if taken properly, you can still have breakthrough ovulation, and a big part of it is that women arent being told about this, most women wouldn't take the risk. also the chemicals from the pill are affecting the fish population, it actually is causing the male fishes to grow female parts. Condoms are much better. they should make a vaginal ring that involves no chemicals so it would be like wearing a condom 24/7, then you wouldn't forget, and men couldn't choose to not wear one

As I said, breakthrough ovulation is very rare and does not always result in pregnancy. Only around 20% of eggs fertalised implant anyway, so it goes unknown to most women. I think this is starting to go more into the argument of abortion, which I wold like to avoid (being pro choice)
Chemicals only get into the enviroment due to women flushing them, not when they are consumed. Flushing pills is discouraged with all medicines as they damage the enviroment.
Condoms are not as trustworthy for preventing pregnancy as the pill (although should be used with the pill for safety) and most married couples will no longer use condomns. Vaginal rings are also not as effective, as well as more tedious and confusing, meaning more likely to not be used properly, particularly with the younger generation (this is why teens who do not use the pill are more likely to get pregnant, as condomns and other methods arent used properly by a large percentage). The vaginal ring also uses the very same hormones as the combined pill, making it no safer.
The pill gives effective contraception, but it does more than that; the pill helps regulate periods and hormones. Its for this reason that I opt for the pill, not for contraception.

Damn.... the amount of detail here is certainly impressive, and quite admirable when considering the condoms and their number! I'm sure those got tiresome after about...4.
Not only is this just a cool layout that really succeeds in drawing the eyes around, but the concept is definitely eye-and-mind-catching. A victory, indeed, over nature's wielding of life forces... concerning birth, at least...

Anyhoo, this is just really awesome. Great style, wonderful execution, and a pleasure to look at!

That's freakin' fantastic! I can see this, believe it or not, as a postage stamp or a poster at Planned Parenthood offices. Great work. Did you have to open up a load of condoms to get each one just right in the grouping of them all? They're all so different and realistic. Again, wonderful work here. Keep it up.

and then i scrolled down and saw the condoms super hilarious, it looks to me that birds are throwing them!
Nice dynamism, and cool concept!

that's awesome. the pill kind of makes me crazy and has sent my periods haywire, and i don't even particularly need to use them 'cause i'm gay, but apparently it should all even out and i shouldn't be like, 'argh death!' after a while.

still very impressive, even though condoms upset me. (;
