Description Both outfits made by me
prosthetics made by me
makeup and prosthetics help by the lovely Juliebot and the Karpster

I promise to get some good full shots soon. Also, I totally forgot to finish Jack's makeup. We were on a time crunch.

Sally and Jack if they were real pirates (yeah, I know they're not very historical ). This was a concept costume and a bit of a stretch, but it was damn fun. I am always in the mood to make another pirate costume, and for once this was a perfect pair for Ian and my height difference!

Sally's dress was stitched completely by hand using only yarn. Yes, the entire dress is held together by yarn. Fabric was hand decorated.
Jack's fitted coat was hand striped using bleach. His cravat is shaped like Jack's bow tie in the movie. The tie pin is made of sculpty. His buttons were hand painted.

Skellington was once a pirate ([link] ), so this cosplay makes me super happy!

Yes he was, but I decided that it would be more recognizable to stick closer to his NMBXmas look, since Mr. Ian does not actually have a skull face. We were hard enough to recognize is it is.

Actually, ....how did you get the stitching to look like that on Sally? I'm going to be doing stitching for my costume this year for Halloween, and i really want to make the stitches realistic, since they will be one of the main highlights of my costume...Any tips?

damnitsasha In reply to IchBinRagady [2010-09-08 21:38:06 +0000 UTC]

I sculpted a line of stitches, made a plaster mold, then made the prosthetic out of liquid latex. If I do this again, I will probably just go the lazy route and draw the stitches on. It too about two hours to get them all on and blended, and they got uncomfortable.

Damn...wonders if the work is worth it...maybe I'll go the lazy rout too.

damnitsasha In reply to IchBinRagady [2010-09-12 12:22:23 +0000 UTC]

You could go in between and do some drawn and some as wire set into liquid latex on your skin so that you have a bit of 3d effect.

IchBinRagady In reply to damnitsasha [2010-09-13 19:14:37 +0000 UTC]

That's probably what I'll do. Or I'll use that glue stuff I forget the name of at the moment, and just glue thread to my skin on top of drawn lines for the stitches. Sadly, the complete and nice version of my costume would run over $600, so I'm just going to build it slowly over time and for now go the cheap rout. >_<

Thanks for the tips! n_n

Mine was not horribly expensive to make. I used various hand-decorated fabrics and stitched it all together by hand with yarn. I don't think it would be that much harder to do the actual movie version.

this is amazing
very original concept and I love everything about it

I'd love to know how you made the prostectics - they're marvelous

damnitsasha In reply to pirategeek [2009-12-01 21:53:47 +0000 UTC]

The prosthetics were easy. First I sculpted the slightly jagged cut out of a non-drying clay used for moldmaking. Then I cut bits of coated wire and embedded them in the clay to form the actual stitches. Then we covered the whole thing with plaster. The plaster hardens rather quickly. Then we took the wire and clay out and had our mold. After you have the mold, you can make as many stitches as your heart desires. I used liquid latex. Just pour it in and make sure to keep the edges thin. Once it's dry, dust it with powder while removing it from the mold, since latex naturally sticks to itself, and the powder will prevent that.

Ok, normaly I'm not a big fan of alternate fan-costumes...but I have to admit that you two not just look really cool but it also works very good. The stich-prostetics are really cool and worth every second and Jacks pirate costue looks awsome. A well done job.

damnitsasha In reply to erlkoenig [2009-10-17 15:02:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
In my opinion, if you do some sort of variant costume, you should do more than putting on a hat and sash. Everything would change on the costume if you were mixing two different things together. The stitches were worth it, but if I wear it again anywhere but dragon con, it won't be worth the time.

Yes, I agree...when I first saw te pic I thought. "Hey, those two look cool...and odly familiar". I think it works great that you took a different direction but somewhere keep close to the characters.

Hmmm, Sally was good to recognize. I guess with Jack it's always hard if you didn't wear a mask.

I forgot about his facepaint, bad as that is. I got a friend to darken the eyes and cheeks with the intent to go in and do the detail work myself, then I just forgot.

Thank you! Yes, the stripes were a pain until they were done.

If I wear this again, though, I will probably just do the lazy drawn on stitches. These took forever to put on.

damnitsasha In reply to gollumsalterego [2009-10-08 12:24:27 +0000 UTC]

If we're going Tim Burton, he has to have spirals!
We couldn't find any spiral buttons for cheap, and the only kind we found were bright white and black, but the costume needed sort of dirty beige and black instead.

gollumsalterego In reply to damnitsasha [2009-10-08 22:42:13 +0000 UTC]

Strange, white and black would normally fit so well, but, obviously, you made the right decision for this particular costume, I would expect no less.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

damnitsasha In reply to gollumsalterego [2009-10-13 03:12:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, pirates wouldn't have anything bright white, so I opted for more natural colors.
