Description Figured it was time for an ID change.

Was helping mom get the swans inside the garage for the winter while home for vacation and happened to be making a pretty awesome face when mom took the picture (really her legs were just flapping the shit out of me)

We have a lot of coyotes in the area right now and they ate every single one of our chickens. Once the snow gets up to the fence they'd have no problem coming after our other water fowl since the pond's all frozen over, so mom fenced out a place for them inside.

I only know how to play one chord of swan guitar as it turns out, and it's a sort of angry snorting noise.

Not by choice I'm afraid. The classical swan you always see is the Mute Swan, which has been imported to the states from europe for decorational purposes, pinioned, and bred for generations. Pinioning means that a third of one wing has been cut off so they can't fly away, that would be like cutting one of our hands off at the wrist.

It's 'necessary' unfortunately because they're rather territorial and when they were allowed free range they started forcing out our native Trumpeter Swans. If these European swans are seen in the wild they're often shot [link] (you can find more on that by googling I'm sure)

They were actully given to us by a lady who used to babysit me who had lost her legs in a car accident. The pairs are mated for life so mom didn't want to separate them, and they can't be neutered or anything, so mom's constantly fighting the battle between taking their eggs or letting them have babies and being forced to pinion them. She's always begging me to take them back to England with me when I visit my girlfriend. xD

Oops! I gave you a bit of an essay didn't I? 8D;

Hah, nice ID! Swans are awesome. I haven't seen any in person for a long time, but I still think they're beautiful.

Although I nearly got eaten by swans when I was little, once. I was 3 and got knocked into the swan pond at the zoo. Maybe they wouldn't have eaten me, but... it was traumatizing.

DamnTorren In reply to StriderWG [2009-12-27 14:15:40 +0000 UTC]

Oh my god, yeah that would do it. All those birds were probably twice your size and hissing their heads off. xD

The women who gave them to us had another pair before the pair we got, and when I was very little and got baby sat by her one of them bit the shit out of my finger. In hinesight it probably didn't hurt that much, but I was probably about 5 and and teeny little fingers

Mute swans are whores.

StriderWG In reply to DamnTorren [2009-12-27 15:39:59 +0000 UTC]

Not to mention almost drowning... I think I have faint memories of it. It wasn't pleasant!

Ouch! That's painful! That would scar any child.

All birds are whores. Even the tiny ones. My cockatiel bites the crap out of me when I try to pet him. Damn birds.

That is really neat!

DamnTorren In reply to Razvan-Sedekiah [2009-12-27 14:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh man, they're not really birds you want to own though They were given to us because the women who owned them (to breed and sell) got in an accident and couldn't take care of them.

Mute swans are an introduced species to the US that has to be pinioned, because in the wild they're allowed to be shot. They've got pretty nasty attitudes at times and can be fiercely territorial, they really shouldn't be in the US, but people import them and buy them because they're pretty D:

Razvan-Sedekiah In reply to DamnTorren [2009-12-28 17:34:10 +0000 UTC]

It's so interesting though!

I imagine any animal is a lot of work to take care of.
I live in a crowded, beach city. I crave nature.
I'd like to live somewhere were there is more than just
one or two trees in people's front yard. And where our houses
are not conjoined. The photo leads me to believe your life is
full of all kinds of wonderful artistic stimulation. ^-^

As they say though... the grass is always greener on the other side... yada yada yada.

Are they actually mute? Or is that just their name?

I've come to love parts of city living that have come with college, but I'll always miss the sticks a little if only for the inspiration that grows all around the thick, untamed forests in boonie ville. I just won't miss the misquitos.

And nah, they're not mute xD But with the sounds they make you would wish they were! Swans look a whooole lot prettier then they sound.
