Description Holy Haggis.

Guys and Dolls, I present my entry in the semifinal match of ‘s Fight League. It’s wasn’t no cake walk, neither. Not so much the execution part, though that was no stroll in the park. No, it was the conceptualization stage that kept tripping me up. I always try to set up my fights so they make sense, or else not have a fight at all (tequila shots, anyone?). And clearly, people wanted an actual fight in this one. But how could everyone’s favorite feathered foe of felony top these two superpowered skirts?

Freddy, lights.

THE PLAID WONDER: Super strength! The ability to summon an army of be-plaided warriors! And the perilously potent Plaidsma beam, rounding out her titanic trifecta of talents! How could the Fowl best her? Well, he couldn’t, really. He’s a sharp detective and a quick thinker and blah blah blah, but that can’t help him too much against a Scottish mob and their curvy ringleader. So here, you can see the Plaid Wonder and her Plaidmen pretty much hand him his ass.

The only one in this match who could logically lay out ‘s Tartan Titan was

VIGIL: To know her is to love her, this time-traveling mother Teresa with the exact opposite of a self-esteem problem. Naturally, she is just as far out of the Fowl’s league in an out-and-out confrontation. So instead of chucking a knife at her, our medicated masked manhunter goes on bended knee and appeals to her sense of superiority. I went for a vaguely Apostle-esque pose with him as he questions the actions of his better. It’s a fair question, I think: Why would one so advanced participate in the bread and circuses of mere mortals?

To this, she has, as of yet, no answer… perhaps the incomparable will give her rebuttal. At any event the two of them hit it off, travel back in time and then head off to the future [link] , because one must travel back to a time when that future was still a possibility in order to access it. It’s science, people. Get hip.

The look of this thing was inspired by and old pop-art comic book exhibit I saw back in Austin a few years back. It was a trick to pull off, since I work in marker only, but I’m rather pleased with the result. Color opens up a slew of possibilities… see how Vigil turns yellow in the last panel, where she starts to question herself and that white purity of her lofty superiority starts to slip away? I could manage something like that in Black and White, but this is so much more effective.

Also featured: THE SCHIZOPHRENIC MANIFESTAION OF THE FOWL’S FATHER, LEVON DeMOGE, because he’s the bee’s knees.

Should this be my FINAL final entry, Let me say again what great fun this whole thing has been. Angelcrusher's a man of, like, greatness and stuff. True story.

The image of Vigil in the second-to-last frame is my favorite image of the group, but I have to admit I chuckled at the Ka-Plaid effect.

Good to hear, on both accounts. That image of vigil went through about a dozen different variations before I finally nailed it down.

This is a great comic page man. I love the colour in this. The red, yellow black and white works wonderfully and really gives off the vintage popart type of feel. Its a nice fight man, fowl realising he cant win physically, but he can break vigil's mind with his sharp whits. Excellent stuff man.

I'm pleased you think so! not (just) because you're a judge, but because when you say something's good, well, that has some weight to it. I reckon this won't be the last we see of this "color" business.

Well now, this is rather good isn't it?

I absolutley love the third panel with Vigil making an appearance. Gorgeous stuff! Your takes on Vigil and PW are fantastic too. Really, really great stuff man.

dan-sch In reply to striffle [2008-09-05 23:30:45 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I think the most fun I've had during this thing is trying to adapt these characters to my patented look. It's weird; Sally, who's such a colorful design, was easy as pie, while the mostly-monochromatic Javi got lost in the translation. I guess that's why I've been breaking out the colored sharpies more and more... they help bridge the gap, as it were.

Anyhow, thanks a lot. It's nice to know (some of) my group is cheering me on!

"KA-PLAID" AAAAH-HAHAHAHAHA

so awesome. Vigil looks like a grown-up Emily the Strange... i like it! and the plaid, OH GAWD, you DREW it! i love how in the top right of the second panel the plaid fades into PW's hair!

SO COOL

Holy hanna, FIFTY GUMMY BEARS? I had no idea! Thank you! I am so very glad you like it. PW's great fun to draw... and by gum, I think you're right about Vigil the Strange.

Uh oh... I think we have a winner! This is fantastic - 'Ka-Plaid!' Why can I only give this one ? Great comic strip - I couldn't manage to fit myu comic ideas onto a single page and still make them work properly -but you've given enough space over to make all three characters look great.

I think I love your ethereal take on Vigil! I'm not sure calling her sad will stop her in her tracks though - I think eleven fights in she's pretty much decided that winning AFL is justification for all this violence - still this is a good tactic - we all know they're sort of friends, after all!

Mine should go up tomorrow morning - took me a long time to get adecent idea together - but hopefully you'll like what I've come up with

dan-sch In reply to Kostmeyer [2008-09-05 22:10:48 +0000 UTC]

Ah so! I guess victory itself is a pretty lofty goal. "Because it's there" and all that. Well played, you interdimensional minx!

Rest assured, I'm chomping at the bit to see what you've cooked up. Fierce anticipation marinated in sheer terror, I mean.

And thanks for the fave! One's plenty, coming from you.

Kostmeyer In reply to dan-sch [2008-09-06 15:29:43 +0000 UTC]

Funny really - Vigil is physically one of the most vulnerable characters in AFL - but she has a reputation for being really powerful - Maybe she talks a better fight han she can give? You're right that her attitude is as much a weakness as a strength though - lol - 'because it's there' is a pretty good summing up! The guy who said that of course got himself killed...

If i would use all emoticons DA has to offer, I couldn't describe how good this is as an idea. Drawing is great, love the use of colors, but simplicity of how he handles the situation is great. Hope to see Fowl vs Ritualist in the final match for some good-old brute force.

Whoa... Where do I begin?

Intepretation of Plaid Wonder - Excellent! And I love panel 2 for multiple reasons. One of them is the unorthodox panel shape that adds extra movement, and the Ka-Plaid SFX.

And I have to admit, I've been having thoughts myself on why Vigil would even consider joining in on such a "pointless slugfest" such as the AFL myself. I mean, with her sense of superiority and that pacifist and all...

Thank god that you said "bee's knees" ... Achilles heel would have sounded so cliché... XD j/k mate... "traditional" is the word... ^^
