After the boom that was the Renaissance Era, Disney underwent some experiments in terms of storytelling, but lacked that spark of the previous era to create a consistent tone. Fantasia 2000 was an amazing film with its nightmarish Firebird, the grand Pines of Rome with its flying whales, etc. Dinosaur was an early step in the transition from hand drawn to CGI, but had glaring anachronisms and lacked the grand scale of the Lion King in terms of an epic animal story. The Emperor's New Groove was a self aware comedy that could be heartwarming and even deep at times. Atlantis the Lost Empire was a darker story with action and a mysterious world to explore with a very morally ambiguous supporting cast and the themes of discovery vs thievery are explored. Lilo and Stitch is a heartwarming tale mixed with a downplayed space opera element. Treasure Planet was a space epic about a young man trying to find his own identity and while the themes of trust are explored with a darker atmosphere of dangerous pirates. Brother Bear was a heartwarming tale of the consequences of revenge taken too far and how it affects everyone; in addition to what family means. They were good, but not to the scale of the Renaissance Era.

....Then Home on the Range came along and it put the nail in the coffin for the majority hand drawn animation film in the West for several reasons, mostly a comedic, light hearted tone that while doesn't stray from the more sadder moments, contrasted with the darker stories of the preceding films, and the Chicken Little, the first real CGI film test since Dinosaur happened which was even kid friendly comedic and It wasn't looking too good for Disney. Meet the Robinsons, the finale of the Experimental Era, was a much needed answer to show the CGI world was the next step in Disney's evolution and that it could tell of a story of what potential could do if one believes in one's self can lead to amazing possibilities.

2D was coming to an end at all studios eventually, not just Disney. Also it is still stupid to blame HOTR itself for the death of 2D instead of the people who used poor marketing and advertising for all these films that they still take no full responsibility for and point the finger at something because its easier. It wouldn't have mattered what film was released as last, the quality would have already ended eventually. Even Princess and the Frog couldn't keep it alive.

This era seems to be hit-and-miss for Disney, but hey, that happens when you’re experimenting.

To me, Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Lilo and Stich, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range are more tolerable than Chicken Little ever will be. HOTR is best in its own way and shouldn't be compared with The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast all the time just because it's like a flashback to Disney features of the 40s and 50s. Chicken Little is the worst.

Chicken Little didn't live up to it's full potential, but creating an original story out of that folk tale was not gonna be easy. I enjoyed the soundtrack though. I had the CD.

Perhaps, but everything about it was mean spirited, with only three friends that didn't treat Chicken Little like crap.

Shouldn't Bolt be listed here?

I like the films of the experimental era much more than the new era. Atlantis has great story, characters, adventure mood, good jokes and lots of fucking action in the plot. Treasure Planet is a futuristic steam-punk version of the great treasure island book, with great characters and connection between them. Chicken Little is considered the worst, but one of the funniest, with a random comedy and nonsense, is filled with comic characters, and touching moments about the dysfunctional relationship between a bullied victim of bullying and a negligent father who does not support him out of fear Of what others will think. And the Meet The Robinsons also earns many points for the exciting plot. I will not quote Lilo & Stich and The Emperor's New Groove, because those I know everyone likes, but the rest in their vast majority is so underestimated. I just love most of these movies.

The ONLY good one from this crap is The Emperor's New Groove. The worst is Home On The Range.

Chicken Little was the worst one of this era, so many mean spirited characters and a horrible deadbeat father who cares more about his reputation than defending his son. That's the worst one.

Don't tell me you dissed on Lilo and Stitch!  It was the most successful film of this era!

Well in my perspective. That movie I think is a bit overrated.
