(Or The Curse, part 15)

About 50 yards from the Paxton's home, Julie watched Mr. & Mrs. Paxton back out of their driveway and go off down the road. As she quickly walked closer to the house, she let go of her thick braids, wanting to feel them swish as she walked. The ends, however, hit the ground with a thud and dragged for several feet before she stopped. Even braided, her hair fell to the ground and left a few feet to spare. She'd need to experiment with some more functional hairstyles, she thought, and smiled at the thought. Maybe Megan would help her out, and they could spend time doing each other's hair again. Her smile faded at the reaction she was likely to receive from Megan, however. That she had let her hair get cut again, that she--

No. Julie couldn't think about this right now. She gathered up her braids, looped them once around her arm, and strode through the Paxton's front door.

She crept in quietly, wondering where to start. She was somewhat acquainted with the Paxtons; Barbara, the wife, was a friend of Julie's mom. She had never met their two sons, however. Well, Julie was sure they would never have had a babysitter quite like this. Would they be good kids, or a handful? Would her hair be safe around them? Julie decided she had better take some precautions, just to be safe. She heard the sounds of Phineas and Ferb coming from the family room downstairs; likely the boys had been told to watch cartoons while they waited for Julie to arrive. Julie had a chance to prevent some hair-related shenanigans, and she was determined to take it.

She quietly crept through the house, looking for anything that might pose a danger to her precious locks. In the course of several minutes, she had gathered four pairs of scissors, a knife set from the kitchen, a pair of gardening shears from the mud room, and a Swiss Army Knife from a hall closet. She found a spot high up in the closet of the master bedroom, and hid the threatening items behind some boxes. If either of these boys had any bright ideas about separating Julie from her tresses, they'd have a hard time of it.

Satisfied, Julie made her way down the stairs to the basement family room, where two boys aged 7 and 5 were parked in front of the television set. She cleared her throat, and a nervous greeting escaped her lips. "H-hello, boys. I'm Julie. I'm here to babysit you for a bit."

The boys turned in unison, and the younger one quickly took a position behind his sibling. They seemed a little nervous, but Julie maintained a gentle demeanor and knelt down to their level.

"What are your names?" she asked, genuinely interested. The older boy shyly answered.

"M-Matt" he said. The other boy had his fingers stuck in his mouth, but Matt answered for him. "This is Mikey. He's my brother."

"I see." Julie smiled. "Well, what are you boys up to? Want to play some games or something?"

Neither answered. Julie noticed that they were staring at her braids, still wound around her arm. She had to admit, normally she did not like being noticed, but having her new hair admired in any way was a neat feeling.

"I-is that your real hair?" Matt queried, a skeptical look on his face. His eyes followed the length of her braids to the tips, his mouth opening wider.

"Yup!" replied Julie. "It's all mine. Do you like it?"

Matt's face fell a little. "My mommy used to have real pretty hair. Now it's all gone. She's sick."

The chemo, Julie understood. Matt and Mikey probably didn't have any real understanding of what their mother was going through, but seeing her lose her hair seemed to not be a good sign.

"I know," Julie stated, empathetically. "But she'll get better soon. Your daddy and the doctors are taking good care of her. Her hair will grow back." Julie hoped she wasn't being too optimistic, but from what her mother said, Mrs. Paxton was responding well to the chemo. And these boys could use a little less gloom and doom.

"Will it grow as long as yours?" Matt asked hopefully. He reached out to touch the braid in Julie's hand, but then hesitated, unsure.

"I don't know about that," Julie smiled. "But if you like long hair, there's plenty here!" She grasped the end of one of her plaits, and brushed Matt on the nose with it. Matt closed his eyes and turned away from the tickle, smiling. Mikey let out a joyous belly laugh.

Julie felt a wave of relief. Apparently she didn't have much to worry about from these cute little munchkins. She stood up and twirled, letting her plump ropes of luscious hair swish around, batting the boys again. They giggled, and each of them grabbed hold of a braid, waving it in the air and running around Julie.

For several minutes, she played the game with them, letting the boys swat each other with her hair, and running around the room. It was such a joyous feeling to let other people enjoy the soft treasure that she loved so much. Was this all really a curse? She pushed what negative thoughts that were in the back of her mind further away, and decided she was going to enjoy this moment.

"Hmm...what other games can we come up with?" she asked. The boys didn't seem eager to let her hair be; eh, what could go wrong? she thought...
