Inspired by Sayda's Dragon Essence [link]

It's finally done... whew!
I don't think I did too good a job on it but it's the best I can do right now.
I still want to do one with Jade. Not sure if I want the glow a deep green or red... most likely red.
Hope the title makes sence now.

Light can be found in the darkest of places. All it takes is to eyes to see it.

Awww, thanks! I just used the plain brush in Photoshop to color, but I got the original idea from Sayda's picture, which is linked in the description.

Awww, thanks! And I just started with a very dark color and make the hilights instead of starting light and adding dark.

Not a good job? You're kidding! That's freakin great right there! A deep red would be good for a darker, more sinister effect, it would look a little more like the girl's thinking "Bwah ha ha, I have suckered you in with the innocent look!"

Very true, and actually I'm going to do another pic just like this with my other character Jade and was probably going to use red... I might just use that idea... thanks!

This one is so beautiful that I just had to comment. I absolutely love the darkness of it with the small area of light. It really has a sad feeling to it with her only comfort being that of the light. The blue tonal colours bring such an atmosphere to it also, and her pose is very gentle which ideally matches the feeling of the piece. Really great job!

this is great, love the glow, but i would like 2 see more wrinkles in the cloths,i have this thing with wrinkles, and have great respect for art that really gets it down pact.but great job anyways.

I don't think with the amount of light there is there would be many wrinkles, especially with her type of dress, but I will keep that in mind for the future! Thanks!

Everyone you draw is sad... Are you trying to send a secret message?

For some reason this picture seems a little creepy though, like she's a ghost or something, and there should be an offkey music box playing somewhere. Is the light supposed to be coming from the pendant? I think maybe the problem is that it's illuminating more of her than it should, around her collar bones. Which by the way, you drew so they're meeting up with her shoulders right, which is nice. So many people get that wrong...

I do like the indeterminate glowy floaty things, though.

danielledemartini In reply to WridianGrey [2006-10-11 14:22:30 +0000 UTC]

Not all of them are sad..... wait.... I lied.... Well, art is my only real outlet for my negative emotioins....

And yes, she is dead. She is an angel after all... but I think what makes it creepy is actually the color of the light. If the glow was green or something I don't think it would be as creepy (in that unsettling sense at least, more like that's so creepy it's cool!). So like how much too hilighted? On her chest?

And the glowy things make me very frustraded and I am glad they turned out as well as they did...

WridianGrey In reply to danielledemartini [2006-10-12 01:34:51 +0000 UTC]

So she is dead... I don't really know her backstory, but when i see an angel character I by default assume they were born or created or whatever as angels. Not that it isn't a decision you can make for yourself, but I generally think of angels as one thing and the souls of those who have passed on as another thing. Somehow angels seem less cool to me as simply dead people. Now, if it's a dead person who underwent some extraordinary circumstances to become an angel, that's something else.

As for the glow, assuming it's the gem part of the pendant that's glowing, I don't see how it could be putting out light behind itself, so it would be limited to a 180 degree arc of illumination. In that case, it wouldn't get so much light on her chest, but would get more light on her shoulders which generally stick out relative to the rest of the ribcage slightly, especially if she is slight of figure. Her face looks a little weird, but that's only because you were if anything too acurate with lighting it. Look closely at some good anime illustrations with complex lighting situations, the shading on the face is always over-simplified. I've grappled with the same problem so I've payed a lot of attention to good examples of complex face lighting and the answer seems to always be to simplify it.

And finally, I'm not going to tell you what sort of emotions to draw, but if I always drew characters looking like how I feel, every single one of them recently would be frustrated and annoyed, and everything I did at Digipen would have been tired, stressed, or depressed. Plus, if you need to draw someone smiling you'll be out of practice...
