Description
These are some tryouts for a project that's based on the theme "decadence", or in other words, a decay in standards and morals and such.. As the theme can be loosely interpreted I went with the following reasoning behind these drawings:
In the late 19th, early 20th century Jugendstil was a prominent movement. It had a short, but strong life. I know it best from buildings and paintings of women. While I am of course for the preservation of old buildings, there is a certain beauty to seeing them all run down. Flooded, moldy, collapsed.. Being taken back by nature, in a way. It's like the contrast amplifies their elegance, especially since nature is such an important source of inspiration for Jugendstil.
At first I tried to draw rooms of old buildings in such a state of decay, but at the moment I'm making drawings based on Jugendstil paintings, influenced by decaying buildings. They're rusty like copper, green like concrete walls covered in algae, the colour of decaying wood.. I'm trying to illustrate neglect while preserving their loveliness.
While I like the drawings, I'm pretty insecure about them.. :/
