It was a cold spring day and Hetro was spending it at home, lying on the couch scribbling ideas in a little sketchbook while the radio played softly in the background. On the other side sat Huebey, who was quietly reading. Their tails were intertwined as they happily enjoyed each other's space. Hetro peeked from the top of his sketchbook, whispering a quick whistle to catch his partner's attention.
"Wanna see what I'm working on?" He'd finished drawing his ideas and was excited to share. Huebey smiled, quirking a brow and scooting over, their shoulders bumping as they leaned on each other. "Look, it's like those puzzles where you gotta pull it all apart, but I was thinking of making one where-"
Suddenly there was a knock at the door and the two looked up, glancing at each other as it went silent. There was a squeaking sound of the mail hatch opening and closing, and a big smile burst on Hetro's face as he scrambled to get up.
"You think it's-" Huebey started as he followed the taller folk across the house.
"Has to be! I didn't think it'd be so soon!" He rushed to the door and sure enough there sat a white envelope, stamped with a red seal. Swiftly picking it up, he spent no time admiring it before tearing the top of the envelope and pulling out the letter inside.
Congratulations recipient,
You have been selected from our raffle of folk that volunteered to join April's Chloromancy class. This class will focus on skills needed to expand the Great Tree's Den as to provide housing for the influx of residents from outside the grove. Attached are documents detailing more information on how the class will progress, as well as times and locations for the lessons.
Thank you for your contribution to making Grimsby Grove a better home for everyone.
Hetro's tail was a blur as he read the letter. He handed it to Huebey, looking like he'd explode with all his excitement. "We got in! We're gonna learn magic!" He spun in a circle as Huebey also read the letter, making happy noises and flapping his hands.
"Where's mine? I don't see another one in here." Huebey dumped out the contents, flipping the envelope over only to see only Hetro's name was written on the front. "... Ah."
Huebey's downtrodden tone made Hetro stop and look as well, and when they both came to realize the same thing, the teal folk deeply frowned. "Oh..." Disappointment and guilt struck him, ears drooping. Here he was, celebrating and probably making Huebey feel worse. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine." Huebey's expression said otherwise, but he forced a smile. "Hey! You get to do it, at least. I know you'll have fun."
"But, just me?" For some reason the idea worried him, his stomach churning a little as he gripped the letter again, rereading it over and over again. "I dunno, it feels wrong, man. I didn’t think it’d be like this." He could hear the radio in the back pick up in volume as an advertisement interluded the program, and the pressure around his ears tightened. He tightly pinned them back, wings shuddering. "I don't want you left out! We were gonna do it together!" His voice cracked with sadness, looking down at Huebey for comfort.
"Hey, hey! It's okay, come here." Huebey took one of Hetro’s hands into his own, lacing them together. “One thing at a time.”
“One thing at a time.” Hetro ducked his head as he repeated the phrase, giving himself a minute to let the noises around him settle into the background again. The sudden whirlwind in his mind went away. “S-sorry. I was looking forward to this.”
“I was too. But I don’t really have the best of luck in these things so I don’t know what I was expecting.” He smiled grimly, then softened his expression back up at Hetro. “Besides that- just focus on having fun, I know you’ll like it.”
“I want to like it with you…” Hetro hunched over sadly. “What if I just pretend you’re on the list? I can write your name on here too… they wouldn’t notice…” He made a grabby motion to the letter Huebey was still holding, but the smaller folk held it away.
“As fun as that’d be, I don’t want you earning a grudge against the Jarl herself over this.” The sarcastic truth flew over Hetro’s perception, and he only frowned deeper. “And! You can tell me how it goes? It’s not like I’m completely left out. Maybe.”
Hetro thought about this with glowing realization, straightening back up with a smile once more. “Yeah! And I can show you what I learn!!” He was grinning and back to his usual self. He took the letter and papers again, stuffing them back into the envelope to not lose them. “You’re going to be so jealous with how masterful I do Color… Colorman…” he squinted and trailed off, but quickly recovered with a wink and a smirk. “That magic.”
“Of course! You’re the wizard here after all.” Huebey sighed and rolled his eyes, and the two continued to banter as they went back to the living room to continue their day together. Hetro would worry about the classes tomorrow, he reassured himself as he sat down and picked back up explaining his drawings.
