Description Saw that somebody was working on a Chat app, so had to throw in a quick mockup haha.

- Single Window -

No more billion windows all over the place. That crap sucks.

- Not tabs, Conversations -

Instead of a dinky tab, let's show a conversation list. That way we can see message previews, avatars, all that good stuff.

- Peace out, Contacts List -

How does it even make sense anymore to have a list of my hundreds of possible contacts. Like I'm gonna scroll through that. No way. Just make a new message for the person you want to contact. Easy peasy.

- No Status Junk -

In our modern world, there is no such thing as "offline". If you have a device that is turned on, it's probably connected to the Internet, making you online. and Guess what? I don't care if you're online or not. If I need to message you, I'm gonna send you a message. When's the last time you went to send a text message and went "gee I wonder if they're online".

- File Transfers -

Easy peasy click-a-button-and-boom file transfers. Oh, and another cool use of the conversation list: let's throw a progress bar in it.

- Stuff I have to figure out -

* What exactly does a new message look like?
* How do I add contacts?
* How do I add accounts?
* What about chat rooms? (like IRC)
* Video chat?
* Presentation mode?
* Fancy content previews (for example, embedded youtube videos or something)
* Other suggestions?

*update*
Overhauled the convo list. Added avatars, IM protocol, changed the date format, group chat, progress bar for transfers, images in chat, add object button, etc.

The process of designing a mobile application has become more streamlined over time. Apple's iOS guidelines are much more straightforward and easier for first-time designers. Similarly Android and Windows Mobile are just as user-friendly offering beautiful interface examples and resources.

The following UI shots are from Dribbble designers who've created unique instant messaging chat applications. These are some of the highest quality interfaces which should provide inspiration to mobile app designers. Whether new or experienced, every designer can glean something magnificent from these mobile interface mockups.

Well, it does make sense to me. I've grouped my ~300 contacts by different criteria (but of course don't display all offline contacts) and I do scroll through that list just to get a quick overview who's online/available.

Man, with such ingenious designs, you should really work for Canonical (like that Faenza developer)! Not saying that ElementaryOS isn't awesome, but your designs would benefit an even broader userbase.

It would be really nice if the contacts were added in some sort of contacts application, also for the accounts the switchboard accounts plugin may be the best case as is system-wide, also chat rooms could show in fancy manner (i.e a fan-like view) everyone's avatar, also i don't really know why you have put the "+" but it could have every extra feature (video chat, file sending).
When it comes to online i do need to check if people are connected or not (at least in skype, which is what I do use), however instead of a status icon , why not make the image in gray colours when it's offline?
PD: I want that app!! XD

ArkBlitz [2013-01-03 02:19:22 +0000 UTC]

A conversation-centric chat app? I'm in! It just needs a pair of tweaks, in my opinion. First, an element in the list to "start a new conversation" and show the contact list. Second, the "Chat" text in the window's "titlebar" is redundant, and it should go as well as all other titlebar text.

ScionicSpectre [2012-12-29 20:19:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm assuming the dialog or popover that appears when you click to start a new conversation would present your contacts, presumably in order of who you chat with most often. Would it really be so bad to present contacts with desaturated or faded icons to make it clear they're not online? I'm only asking because my work actually depends a lot on knowing whether or not my contacts are actually using their computer, and not knowing without asking first could get unnerving.

An example- I'm going to talk with a client realtime to quickly hammer out some details on a design we're doing. So, I start a conversation, "Hi, Sally." Getting no response, I assume she isn't available, and she just so happens to have been wrapped up and needs to meet again the next day. I say hi again the next day, and when this person finally gets online they see a few missed greetings from me, and I feel like a nagbucket.

If I at least knew whether their chat client was on and receiving messages, this would resolve the above situation. Some would even argue that knowing the Busy status is important not to enrage anyone, and saying, "my chat app doesn't tell me about how busy you are," isn't going to make you look very smart.

Just my two cents- the rest looks excellent. It could well be that my chat habits could easily be adapted to the same idea as SMS on a phone, but a simple visual cue wouldn't hurt, right?

MarcelCamaret [2012-12-25 18:46:18 +0000 UTC]

close and maximize are too small, the other icons should be monochrome. maybe have the search faded to the same grey as the rest of the {tool, window title}bar, until click/rollover. other than that looks awesome.

nequil112 [2012-12-23 20:27:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, not showing the current persons' status is a bad idea. I'd want to know if the person I'm writting to is gonna respond in a sec or an hour.

I know a lot of people who aren't online ATM. Also you can have 'away', 'do not disturb' or other statuses (additionally your status may be 'hidden'). And in some IM protocols (like gadu-gadu) a short text can also be a part of status (for example 'FFFFFUUUUU!!! Too much work').

Or is it only for Facebook chat?

* What about voIP integration ?
* How can I change the default picture in Chat ?
* Why not using the libUnity progressbar for file transfer ?
* I like the option of taking the online, offline stuff away but sometimes i need to know if my message has been read or not.
So what about integrating the "read feature" which is also present in iMessage ?

It`s only me who sees this quite like Dexter, Geary and a Chat application - All in one.

I think that would be the best idea of simplicity. You can`t go wrong there. The only problem i can`t figure out in this would be how to differentiate Mails from IM. But they look so alike and would just clear 2 apps and get a nice unified app with a beautiful core.

PS: COMUNICATOIN would be a great name for it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScionicSpectre In reply to elix000 [2012-12-29 20:28:29 +0000 UTC]

I think the only place where this falls apart is when you get an HTML-riddled email from Amazon or Paypal, or some activation code for a website. The UI would have to adapt to that somehow (putting it in a chat bubble seems weird).

It is interesting to note the similarities, though- GNOME's design for Chat and Mail are pretty much identical, for instance. I guess I'd like to hear the arguments for why this would be a bad idea (maybe people want their personal life separate from whatever email they get, to avoid annoyance?).

I love how clean and minimalist it looks. Content previews like on Facebook messages page would be cool.

However, once it is a chat app and not just a messages app, I'd like to know who is online for a real-time talk (or busy at work). Maybe a colored dot next to the date and/or another one right beside the contacts names, when the user search them to start a new conversation? What do you think?

When you start typing I'd like the text field to expand and add room for a "send"-button. I've noticed that if you use regular facebook on a mobile browser (touch interface) it can be a pain to write messages since you can only send a message by pressing enter, there's no button for it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

zeeeeee [2012-12-15 10:55:32 +0000 UTC]

It looks pretty compact, I would like to see how the contacts list works with this (or if that list on the left is the contact list, I would like to see how incoming messages look like, for long contact lists).

About the titlebar with the toolbar in some mockups, I like the concept, but would prefer if the close and maximize buttons would stay in the same place as the other windows, for consistency. They look kind of displaced this way.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Anubeon [2012-12-15 10:48:21 +0000 UTC]

I assume that the sidebar is the conversation list/history, so where is the contact list in this pretty little chat client to be? I'd really like to see an elementary inspired chat/broadcast client someday. I'm just getting by with empathy and Hotot (although the latter lacks some important integration features at the moment).

Also, I too have noticed this new style of merged title/toolbar and wonder whether there are any plans afoot to have Gala render windows thus (for Luna+1 or Luna+2?). I do think that the window controls (close and maximise/restore) should probably remain tight to the windows corners, but perhaps that would destroy the Γ¦sthetic of this new style of merged title/toolbar (and perhaps that me clinging to the old ways, as I initially did vis a vis elementary's new titlebar window control placement, which I eventually got used to with the caveat of programming titlebar double-clicks as minimise)

Hey Dan, i've observed several mockups of yours and have noticed how you're implementig the toolbar and the title bar in a single one. Are there any plans for doing so with the rest of the applications? is it really worth it?

Thanks for your time

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DanRabbit In reply to Beykex [2012-12-15 20:01:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, it saves like 24px of space (which is the about the height of the panel). So if you think hiding the panel is worth it, then this should be too

I'm not sure it's 100% feasible anytime soon. But, we'll see what the future holds

ArturoIlhuitemoc In reply to DanRabbit [2012-12-18 22:36:54 +0000 UTC]

If you will save space, I think the toolbar could be at least 8px thinner...
