Wow, how many times have i been there? XD This perfectly captures the feeling of "awkward-geekness-fail"

... Yes that's what i'm calling it.

How could you, Shive?! I used to look up to you! I used to think you were cool!

... Actually I still think you're cool, but for the purposes of this rant I shall conveniently forget this piece of information.

From this day forth I hereby declare you my bitter rival (who I occasionally pester because I have no social life and I'm lonely)

Being somewhat serious for a moment, good piece. Colorscheme works well, and the background pattern effectively draws the viewers eyes towards the focal point.

Where did you get that font for the upper text? Future evil warlords demand to know!

If it makes you feel any better, I haven't seen most of those movies, either. Only Labyrinth (which I recommend seeing, by the way) and most of Planet of the Apes (only because it happened to be on).

Of course, I haven't gotten around to scouring your gallery since I made my account, so I'm effectively a nobody, as far as you can tell. So my opinion might not matter much

(Just for the record, I've been reading the comic for a few years now. I don't remember for how long exactly, but since long before Sister 2, at least.)

It's more important to have read The Princess Bride than to have seen it. The movie is epic, but the book was better. And dude! You haven't seen the Labyrinth or Rocky???

The movies you listed in your blog are all a good start. Netflix is your friend. Howabout Mel Brooks: Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Space Balls, Producers (I reccomend the musical one), History of the World part 1.

I'll assume you've seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail at least.

Dan, you do realize this can be easily resolved via video rental store, right?

Best Buy works too.

Bah, this only means you're not a movie geek. Or at least not that kind of movie geek. (Me, I go geek on movies from every decade from the '20s on.)

I'll forgive you, if you've seen (or will watch) The Dark Crystal (or just Dark Crystal).

It's an old muppet-like film with big vultures and elves. And a mop with teeth

Well, While I have seen each of the films you mentioned, I don't expect everyone else to have seen them.
Especially since tastes differ and what I think is a staple of geek culture may well leave someone else attempting to dissolve their eyes in acid to attempt to block it all out o_O

There are films that I highly recommend simply because I really enjoyed them. They mightn't be as awesome now as they were then, but I still suggest the following:

UHF [link] - Weird Al Yankovic in his own movie... what could go wrong?

Princess Bride [link] - It's funny, and has Andre the giant in it.

Tron 2.0 [link] - Video game, circa 2003. After watching the Tron movie, this game was legendary. N.P.H legendary!

Battle Royale [link] - Japanese movie which may put some people off right away but I loved it. Somewhat violent and some real cheesy special effects but enjoyable none the less.

Jonat In reply to djHg [2010-03-27 16:46:18 +0000 UTC]

I still have yet to see UHF - cause its not readily available in the UK D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

djHg In reply to Jonat [2010-03-27 20:44:29 +0000 UTC]

I've found it's not readily available anywhere... I stumbled across it totally by mistake one day while looking for something else ^_^

Could probably buy it on Amazon or something, but you'd want to see the movie before you did that...

Hi random bystander here. I too haven't seen that movie, if it makes you feel better, then again I tend to stay away from movies like that ( which is a total li considering i watched princess and the frog last night and found it qute enjoyable) OH GOD WHATS WRONG WITH MY BRAIN!

Jonat In reply to RattyBuns [2010-03-27 16:47:11 +0000 UTC]

The Princess Bride isn't really like The Princess and the Frog tho.

It's more like... robin hood. (film, not cartoon)

Well to be fair, I've never seen Apocalypse Now, The Princess Bride or Rocky... or Rambo for that matter- simply because they never appealed to me. I also can't see how Apocalype Now counts toward geek cred

Tron, Labrynth and Planet of the Apes (the original ones- not that hack job they did with the remake) are films you really should see.

I agree with ~FalconWarrior though- if you'd never seen the Star Wars or Star Trek films (either/or) then you're in serious geek cred trouble. I'd argue Peter Jacksons early stuff such as The Frighteners but its not particularly geeky in itself.

Same goes for Lucas' Howard the Duck.

I don't think there really is such a thing as geeky films though- if anything makes someone geeky its their response to the films.

This makes me feel so much better about not seeing Firefly until I was nineteen. Don't worry, if my geek cred could survive that, you can come out of this with yours intact.

FalconWarrior [2010-03-26 19:47:21 +0000 UTC]

I've only seen two of the movies you listed; but arguably that hardly counts as high-priority geek-cred material. If you had never seen the original Star Wars trilogy that might mean something, but while the movies you listed are good movies, they're hardly necessary.

Des-Shinta [2010-03-26 19:13:20 +0000 UTC]

umm...I've never seen any of those movies either. Despite the references you end up knowing from TVtropes, there's not much missed. So not much geek Cred lost.
