Kari Byron from Mythbusters! Whee! The reference for this drawing is from the James Bond Special, Part 2. She's sitting down by some "Odd Job" hats in the scene, though I was too busy trying to get her face right to bother going much lower.

Incidentally, I am apparently an oddity in my life drawing class in that the faces are the easiest part of the body for me to draw; my professor says it's usually the opposite

I actually used sighting (siting? however it should be spelled) for measuring proportions. It's not perfect, but it's WAY better than I could've done a few weeks ago. In addition, prior to the shading, it totally confirmed what I recently talked about in my journal: [link]

In addition to simply wanting to practice drawing people, this was practice using a blending tool. I was so worried about messing up the drawing via blending that I scanned the image prior to doing any, but I like the results I got with the blending tool better than without.

The only thing I don't like about blending so far is that I think it increases the odds of the graphite transferring onto other stuff (like the opposite pages in yonder sketchbook) though that might not always be the case. I dunno. I'm new at it.

I know it's been a year since you posted this, but I just came across it. You know how much she looks like Ellen right here? Kinda creepy, in a way... and sexy in another! xD

You're awesome and I love your work.

Yes, yes it does. And it's a bitch. There's some sort of spray you can get.. its an aerosol. It puts a sort of finish on the page so nothing rubs off. But you gotta do it after the image is completed otherwise you won't be able to work on it anymore..

Ya know, this one aint half bad. She looks a little rounder than the actual girl, but it stylizes it. Your choices in shading on the shirt seem kind of sporadic, and a little loose and free spirited, though. That and the shape of the mouth, but I understand how that is. Lips are an awkward thing to draw.

Congrats mate, you've made a stunning image almost identical to the real Kari!

The first thing I can think of when I look at the pic is that her face looks a little flat to me. It may be the fact that there is less shading on the actual features than on the hair and body areas.

Hrrrm, you know, what you've said about shading has me curious. I'm not much of a artist though, so I can't do it myself to see....

Know if anybody has put up some kind of before/after pics as examples?

Nice job on this! You're definitely getting the hang of realism. Just one thing I might mention, a little nugget of wisdom that I found infinitely useful in improving realism portraits - don't outline the lips. try to just fill in the shape with color - or, if you really can't do it without outlines, make them light, instead or dark, bold strokes. It'll come out looking a lot more realistic :3

This is good advice; I'm still getting used to that mentality of not outlining certain things and letting the shading handle it. I mean, I'm a cartoonist, not a... um... ok, this Dr. McCoy joke has collapsed. Just walk away... *runs*

Good, good. I'd keep working on it, to get it closer. Not at all a bad start, though.

I haven't seen Mythbusters in a while--does she have a particularly aquiline nose? Otherwise, awesome. I love the eyes particularly.

there's indeed a resemblance, she just seems more round than Kari
mainly the crazed look

or have I not been watching enough mythbusters in widescreen?

The face looks round because the chin is too short. I just did an overlap in Photoshop to compare, and while much of it goes together pretty closely, the chin is definitely off.

I believe it's because I used her nose as a vertical frame of reference, and I think I used a measurement going to the bottom of the nose to about where it meets the eyes, when it should have been from the bottom of the nose to the top of the eyes. The latter would have been close to perfect.

Also, her left shoulder extends too far, and predictably, her hair is more "poofy" horizontally than it should be. Yay Photoshop for checking stuff!
