Description This project was probably the most problematic and labor intensive picture I've worked on in the past year. Flawed by hiccups and other issues (clarifying lineart, coloring, the eyes being too pixelated), this is as best as I could make it.

I got inspired by a few comic styles I saw recently from a few pictures and wanted to try the style myself. The linearting itself took about 10 hours and the coloring took about 2 times longer than my normal process, so overall it took about 22-24 hours of solid work over the course of a week and I don't know if I'm terribly satisfied with it. The little errors here and there really add up for me. Also, the logo was something I was doing out of boredom over the course of a few weeks so I found a use for it (finally).

Well, this is gonna be a poster (if I go through with making it into one) that resembles a comic book cover for Syron and his adventure to stop Kaius from piecing together the remnants of the Calamity Diamond. The dynamic celling on the lineart was the biggest pain and the entire lineart was done using the pen "fill" tool, not stroking.

A different style from me for sure, so I don't know if it's really all that good on the quality stage. I kinda was hoping it would turn out more professional so this result was so-so for me. :/

Anyway, I hope you like it.

I think alot of the points you mentioned amiss were because I was trying a style completely different from that I have done in the past. The ambient glow caused by the various power objects and such I normally would execute in a situation such as this. I didn't do them this time around mostly due to the type of cell I was going for (which probably fell a bit flat). The effects I used were also way different from what I was used to, as they were done in more of a comic-esque variant (so they would probably look a bit better if I had executed them as I normally do.)

The image itself was supposed to be defiant of physics and such (as you addressed) because this was supposed to be more of a poster. It was supposed to look overly posed and with the bangs going in directions other than they would flow if this was in motion.

I do agree Cassira does need more development as I hardly ever draw her. I dumped most of my attention to Faulkner and Syron and seemed to have neglected a major design in the process.

Also, looking back, I probably should have done the characters separately so I could tweak them individually. Cassira does look squashed because all three characters were done in 1 layer (mostly because of the sketch being one solid piece.

I felt that this was pretty lackluster and this really proves it, but it's due to me going so far out of my style to do something I've never really tried before. Thanks for the feed back. I doubt I'll return to this style any time soon, because it seems I really left alot amiss.

I also forgot to mention that their teeth aren't visible. Their mouths are wide enough, so at least fangs should be visible.

Referring to your first and second paragraph, I see what you mean.

You hardly ever draw Cassira? That a bit of a shame, as she would definately be a most interesting character...who need different bangs. And yes, I would most certainly agree to later drawing the characters separately. And that's the word I was looking for...'squashed'.

I don't think it's lackluster--more so amateur. This WAS your first attempt at this style--so you couldn't have expected it to come out all that gloriously-amazingly-prefect. I would suggest trying out this style a bit more on smaller-scaled projects, only if you want to.

And you are welcome.

That title looks so epic!
'Sairon Kitsune'- love your use of Japanese subtitles there Especially for the comic style, it's really effective.
Once again, your colouring is absolutely fantastic! And the dynamic comic-style lineart, really fits well with the colouring.
Excellent work Sy! <3

Wait, wait, a COMIC?! Isn't it going to be hard labour for you everytime we want moar? Also using the pen FILL tool instead of stroking? Aw, that's skill! You SHOULD be happy! I mean, looks at your picture! I can already see a comic of this! Well, you do plan on making a comic, work on a good pace. Like a REALLY good one. It's hard. Like HARD.

Originally seeing this for the first time I immediately thought it looks very very similar to Syaming-li's past front covers for Soundspeed, however in full view this somewhat subtracts due to the art style you have gone for.
Immediately I'm hit by your line work which is so crisp it's stupidly good. I really REALLY dig your black fills and placement of them and it really emulates a marvel vs capcom 3 look which i envy! Over all the line work is flawless and is a credit to your attention to specific detail.
Colours wise they all work well, there is however one little niggle and it's simply due to the colour of the character and it's the top golden yellow one. Immediately my eye is drawn to it and then to the two below, this is ofcourse not bad if that is what you were going for but again not knowing too much about the project myself i can't comment on the level of importance to the characters featured from the project. Artistically I think it's really really well done. If it was on a shelf in a book store like waterstones over here or w h smiths I would instantly pick it up based on the art alone.
I love the logo work, it all points the project towards a futuristic setting and the characters emulate this aswell, the background again helps out aswell as well, one of things you can have is a really good set of characters based in a certain setting but, if the type font you've used or the colours or logo used doesn't reflect that it can completely off set it and give people the wrong impression. A sense of indecent surprise? However here there is no doubt that you have hit the nail right on the head and have set your characters in their time and place with a heading that fits it all nicely together.
Composition wise it's to the point, 3 friends in search of adventure looking to stop an evil tyrant from piece the Calamity Diamond back together. The nice little touches like the shards in the background and little lightning sparks make it seem as though it's not going to be a clear cut and dry job.
Over all Dan. I'm really impressed, I'm very interested in seeing what you've got underneath the hood on this project and am so glad I watched you. I look forward to seeing many magical and wonderful things filling my inbox from you very soon my friend. Hope this critique helps you.

this helps me tremendously. I will definitely keep the character focus and order of importance in mind in future projects (this issue was brought up later as the golden character (Faulkner) isnt the main protagonist)

I really like the experimentation here .o. sort of a new way for you to portray colors too, giving our eye a new way to focus in on your work- The posing and perspective is very admirable and crazy [in a good way- but of course] I do indeed feel like I'm looking at something I Might pick up at a comic shop [If I were infact a big comic reader- I'm not unfortunately, but nevertheless.] The black helps us home in on all the wonderful colors you've added here.

As I said I like where this is going, but of course I have to offer some constructive stuff too- I know you'll appreciate a comment bigger than "omg cool!" or any of the typical "two word praises"

I would really like to see you focus on muzzle perspective [as weird as that sounds]
It's something that's always been on my mind to bring up to you, and I see your muzzles changing a slightly in this picture, but even so I still felt I'd like to bring it up as an area to further construct

Overall your muzzles aren't half bad- but I feel they're missing that final tweak that makes them look a bit more like they curve all the way around the face , maybe try experimenting a little with them :>

I'm sure with ample time I could think of much more critique but I have a strong fear of rejection so I'll have to stop with that

As I said on skype, I really like the western comic inking style- almost reminds me of some of Axer's inked comic layouts.
And it's really great that you've experimented with both coloring and lineart on this! It's different for you- so don't be too hard on yourself. ;')

Posing is crazy and the logo really tops it off- literally! :'D
