Mark unzipped his jacket to reveal his tattoo, a gray circle with a skull at its center and two scythes crossed beneath it reminiscent of an ancient Jolly Roger flag with the word Memento written across the top of the circle and Mori written at its bottom.
“Remember death,” Diana said, reading the text.
Mark nodded. “That’s right. Do you like it?” he asked, not so subtly puffing up his chest for her.
Diana smiled coyly and brought her drink to her lips. The heat in her gaze seized hold of Mark’s attention and just as he was about to ask her again something much more tangible seized hold of his left arm.
“Back off my girl,” a deep voice snarled as Mark felt himself jerked around towards the sound of the voice. His eyes reflexively found a human face, twisted into an angry grimace, before rapid movement drew them to the fist in the air.
Duck entered his mind just as the fist connected with his face. Darkness fell over everything as his eyes pinched shut to protect the relatively fragile bones in his face followed instantly by a flash of light as the jolt of the blow rocked his brain.
Hands up. Katya’s voice came directly into his brain, bypassing their tech implants completely to psychically put the thought into his mind. He raised his hands and opened his eyes just in time to divert the follow up punch.
I got this. If Katya was still rooting around his thoughts.and he was sure she was, she’d hear the words just as clearly as he heard hers a moment before. Now aware that he was under attack, Mark put up a much more formidable defense. His attacker, a thickly muscled man with long dark hair pulled back in a ponytail and thin leather straps over his chest rather than a shirt, kept swinging with powerful, but inaccurate punches. They were predictable enough that Mark could deflect and evade the ones coming for his face, but the body shots had too large of a target for him to get out of the way.
Don’t kill him. Katya said to Mark’s mind as she watched the fight with her arms folded over her chest. He didn’t bother to reply this time and instead ducked a high punch from the attacker and countered with a sharp jab at his solar plexus. The force of the blow surprised the larger man and stunned him briefly. Before Mark could capitalize on retaking the initiative, bouncers swarmed the pair and pulled them apart.
“That’s enough!” they shouted. “You’re done. Take it outside.” The human behemoths hauled both men apart and started dragging them towards the club’s door, parting the crowd of patrons that had naturally gathered around the violent show.
In moments, the bouncers hurled the pair out into the alley with Katya and Diana following along behind the would-be brawlers. The bouncers left them there with a few choice words and a slam of the club’s door.
“So you are with him,” Diana said accusingly to Katya earning a lopsided smirk from the lavender skinned woman.
“Not in the way you think. We’re just teammates,” Katya answered. Before Diana could press her for clarification the two men were back on their feet and squaring off with each other.
“We done or what?” Mark asked while shrugging out of his jacket. “Because she came over to me, man.”
“Saying I can’t hold onto my woman, then? Oh, we’re so not done,” the other man shot back.
“I kinda figured you’d say that,” Mark answered. “This is a game for the two of you, eh?” he asked with a quick glance at Diana. She only smiled in response. “Two for two,” Mark muttered and raised his hands for a fight.
