Description Some time ago, I had a rather strange dream - specifically, a fandom-related dream, which by itself is very unusual for me, since I don't normally dream about fictional characters or settings. Which is a shame, really, considering how much time I spend thinking, writing and drawing for my fandoms.

It was a surprisingly coherent dream, centered around Wilbur Whateley and Marceline Bedard and what I would tentatively call their 'working relationship'. Wilbur lived in the family house in Dunwich with his twin (locked up in the attic and excluded from the fun), and Marceline would drop by from time to time and stay for a while. They had gathered all sorts of weird artifacts to use and study, and had a To Do List of rituals to perform. The dream seemed to be 'drawn' in a style identical with my own. Parts of it were similar to comic-book pages, but most of it was animated. Needless to say, it was awesome to see 'my' drawings move! Among the high-lights were seeing Wilbur Whateley walk backwards and Marceline Bedard's hair move and even attack.

***

I've been working on and off on this thing since July. Then hiatus happened.

I chose to draw it in a style similar to that of [based on a dream] Tranquility , which was inspired by the same dream - more detailed than my usual stuff, with bright colors, little to no shading and a visible source of light that does not actually 'interact' with the rest of the drawing.

Here's some trivia:
   -  I started with a simple image - Will and Marcie standing around a re-created (or rather pre-created) ritual scene, consisting of books (for the hill, because where else do you perform eldritch rituals when a Whateley is involved?) and various trinkets that symbolize the different parts of the ritual. Fun fact - when I first drew the trinkets, I had a clear idea as to what exactly each trinket is a symbol of; the thing is, I drew them at three o'clock in the morning and then went to bed, and basically to this day I can't remember what the trinkets are supposed to symbolize.
   -  One of the first 'extra' details were the "charm bags", the purpose and history of which I couldn't figure out until I started coloring them in. I mean, what the hell could be so important that Wilbur Whateley would need a special bag to contain... then I remembered that I'm talking about a character who managed to keep a giant tentacled monster confined to an old farmhouse for years. So yeah, I more or less stopped wondering, but by then I'd figured out what the bags were made of what they could possible contain and tbh I'm not exactly proud of the direction my subconscious took.
   -  Another, more fun 'detail' were the scraps around the maps - newspaper clippings depicting various weird phenomena that were actually triggered by Will and Marcie's rituals; and what are supposed to be the humble beginnings of at least two 'conversations' via tacked notes (I like to imagine that the conversations went on to cover the rest of the wall, at least until they needed to put up another map/more clippings).

EDIT: My sleeping schedule is officially in ruins, so I mourned it by adding even more garbage to this already cluttered room.

Just noticed "How to Make Friends And Influence People" book. I can't even.
Is it Wilbur's? I suppose Marceline doesn't need such stuff - she already knows all that, or at least thinks she does.
So much detail and subtle jokes - you're a genius!

Ahh, yes, I was running out of titles and thought, 'what the hell, let's throw it in!'. I honestly have no idea whose it is. Perhaps a gag gift from Marcie to Will?

This piece was an absolute joy and horror to work on, and if anything it inspires me to create as detailed works as possible, as I myself love detailed works.

You're welcome.

BTW, in this scenario - Will and Marcie as partners in ritual crime - I don't think either of them can cook... And considering my headcanon for Wilbur's feeding habits, they'd most likely eat separately.

One time he found a recipe book and decided to try out some of the things... Long story short he burnt the soup.

dark-precipice In reply to Hokova [2014-11-21 16:21:39 +0000 UTC]

No, but it's actually possible, if you think about it - if you leave the pot on the stove for too long, the water evaporates and the veggies are left to burn on the bottom.

Hokova In reply to dark-precipice [2014-11-21 16:29:00 +0000 UTC]

dark-precipice In reply to Hokova [2014-11-21 16:33:53 +0000 UTC]

dark-precipice In reply to Hokova [2014-11-21 16:52:44 +0000 UTC]

This reminds me, back when I was learning how to cook, I kept burning the same pot, but only when cooking peas. I think it still had black marks on the bottom...
