When Nia was 18, she enlisted in the NAC Military Corp to fight in the 4th Battle of the Americas. Due to the special training she received from her mother and grandmother, both highly skilled assassins, Nia rose through the ranks extremely quickly. After only one year in the service, she was transferred to the elite NAC Special Ops Division, where she was given command of a unit of 10. Captain Tanaka's squad was highly successful at their missions, and soon they were considered one of the most effective black ops teams in the entire corp.

Six months after being given her own command the war ended, but her squad continued to be deployed on sensitive, and top secrets around the globe. Seven years after the end of the 4th American conflict, Brazil instigated the 5th Battle of the Americas. By this time, Nia had become a special operative and was now doing solo missions for the NACMC. The 5th conflict lasted six years. In the final year of the war, when Nia was 31, she was deployed to Brasilia destroy a major munitions factory and steal important strategic documents. Nia had set explosives in the plant that were supposed to go off after enough time for her to steal the documents and reach her extraction point. However, her plan was derailed when a Russian agent entered the room while she was downloading the data. She disposed of him quickly, but his partner, Svetlana Romanov caught up with her as she was leaving the complex.

The battle between Tanaka and Romanov lasted 3 hours. Not only was the agent Nia killed Svetlana's partner, but he was also her mentor, so Romanov fought furiously to avenge her fallen comrade. The munitions plant exploded during the battle. Worried the explosion might cause security to be ramped up at the base, preventing her escape, Nia got distracted allowing Svetlana to get the upper hand for a single moment, and the Tsar's cousin took that moment so sever Nia's left forearm. Nia only felt the pain for one second before her Combat Stim Delivery System kicked in, giving her the strength and energy to take the Russian agents right arm and left eye. She was about to finish off Svetlana when she heard footsteps approaching quickly, so Nia left the operative to bleed out and ran to her extraction point. Her stims gave her enough adrenalin to get to her rendezvous, but she lost consciousness while waiting for the extraction team. She woke up in a hospital back in NorAm and found out that the information she had retrieved had turned the tide of the war. A month later, NorAm and the South American Continental Alliance signed a treaty ending the war. Nia served for one more year before returning to Chrome City. The training she received from her family, combined with her elite Special Ops training gave her the skills that allowed her to become the top mercenary in the city.
