Description British riflemen. I drew this awhile ago and found it just now as I was looking through my art folder for old doodles.

I looked up a reference for the rifle of that period, I don't remember what it was called. Hopefully I haven't drawn them too small, as the reference didn't have a person next to it for scale.

Black and white because it was made to go in a rules book.

The pistol is out of date by perhaps 10 years (it appears to be a Colt New Model ArmyΒ  revolver c1860-1865).Β  An officer of this period would have aΒ  Beaumont–Adams revolver, a rather slab sided weapon as opposed the the very streamlined looking Colt New Model Army revolver.Β Β  The Martini-Henrys should be a little longer 49 inches (124.5 cm).Β  The Helmets are missing the regimental crest on the front (for the Rork's Drift engagement it should be the 24th Regiment of foot).

What ever happens
Β  we have got
Β Β  the Maxim gun.
and they have not.Β  (From later than the Zulu War period)

Load the martial pipes are sounding,
Ev'ry manly heart is bounding,
As our trusted chief surrounding,
March we, Harlech men.
Short the sleep the foe is taking;
Ere the morrows morn is breaking,
They shall have a rude awakening,
Roused by Harlech Men.
Mothers, cease your weeping,
Calm may be your sleeping,
You and yours in safety now,
The Harlech men are keeping.
Ere the sun is high in heaven,
They yon fear, by panic riven,
Shall, like frightened sheep, be driven,
Far, by Harlech men.

Martini Henry! I've had some experience with the rifle myself even though it was all blank fire (we use some on loan from the Romanian Army museum for reenacting the Romanian War of Independence, 1877-78) but I imagine it has some hell of a recoil... The calibre is 11.43Γ—60R.

Many thanks, indeedy! I've followed the development of firearms in use by the Brits, so far from the 1770s through to the modern day.
